OT: World Politics

No idea what it looked like before the war, but not like this I'm guessing

Welcome to what's left of Bakhmut

About the closest thing to Verdun we've had since Verdun.

not to nitpick, but I would consider Soledar and Bakhmut to be separate cities. Both along the same frontline. And Bakhmutske is like a suburb of Soledar. actually, I guess I am nitpicking.

but the overall point certainly remains!

Hmmm, might need a new wave of conscriptions then.

They should call up this newly eligible patriotic citizen:

Here's what bugs me. Transparency is good and there is an obvious attempt by western governments (driven by the US security apparatus) to not be particularly transparent with anything they consider to be a security matter. Worse, they're really fucking cavalier with how they scrape for personal data with minimal oversight. I do appreciate that there are rival governments who mean us legitimate harm that are significantly worse though (this imo is a fact that the left wing warriors have lost sight of....Murica can definitely be bad, but China, Russia, the Saudi's, Turkey, Iran, etc are definitely much much worse) so our security structures have a tough balancing act. How to balance individual freedoms against geostrategic necessity, and I'm not naive enough to believe that they stick the landing nearly as often as they probably should.

But...with all of that said. I really wish that two dipshits like Snowden and Assange weren't the faces of that movement. Fuck the both of them.

When it comes to Snowden, I appreciated the principled stand he took in exposing real scum-fuckery and abuse of civil liberties that was taking place at the NSA.

I also believe that he never really intended for Russia to be his final destination, but basically just got stuck there.

But none of that excuses becoming a full-throated Putin shill like he has. It makes it worse, honestly. From principled stand to supporting and joining a genuine authoritarian regime that openly pisses on the concept of human rights, the rule of law & civil liberties.

reading between the lines, sounds like the corpse of Bakhmut may fall soon too. Not apparently of any strategic value other than Wagner has been trying to capture it for months and basically razed it instead

The accounts I follow were saying that Ukie reinforcements arrived today. But yeah some rumours apparently that the Ukies are considering a change of tactics in the region. Might not be worth the men and equipement they're using to hold Wagner there when they're allegedly near or mid breakthrough in Kreminna and just took a foothold on the south bank of the Dnipro.

Ukies smashed a military airfield 800km inside Russian territory a few hours ago with what is being assumed to be the fruits of their long range "black box" program. Dunno if it's a drone or missile but it dummied a few long range bombers that were sitting on the airstrip.
