Another layer to this is that in recent years (and especially this year, for obvious reasons), more Ukrainians have started celebrating Christmas on the 25th of December, instead of Orthodox Christmas on the 6th of January. Zelensky’s also pointedly been putting out his Christmas messages on the 25th.

Now along comes Putin to remind them that in his “Russian World”, which Ukraine is a part of, Christmas is celebrated on January 6th and Ukraine had better lay down their arms to honour that date alongside its glorious motherland.
