OT: World Politics

I'd say something about the Russians saying the quiet part out loud. But, they always said it out loud. It was never actually quiet

Chechen infighting would be ideal, but I'd be surprised. Even Kadyrov's rivals seem to be placated these days. There doesn't seem to be a lot of desire for another run at independence, etc.

If that's a bad assessment though, jeeeebus. That would be super ugly for Vlad.

Something weird is going on in China with all these senior cabinet ministers being disappeared. Foreign affairs? Defence? Jeebus.

Xi is cleaning house. But these were recent appointments, it’s not like they were holdovers. Apparently, he got a dressing down from the old time retired senior party guys. Maybe because the economy is slowing? But that was inevitable. Corruption? Bah, part business model part pretext for smiting rivals.

It’s weird. Are they afraid of their own people? I read somewhere they stopped publishing youth unemployment statistics. 🤔

the cynic in me believes that the Americans have done the math and will ensure the Ukies get what they need to drive the Russians out of Ukraine.

......eventually. But that the Russians bankrupting themselves and throwing away a generation of young men into a long conflict is the best value proposition for the US & their nato allies in the medium and long term.

There's no way they're rationally concerned about escalation or any such nonsense. They have Russia stuck in a position where the regime has to bleed itself dry trying to salvage anything resembling a victory here, and they're going to milk it as much as they can and they're willing to pay the cost in Ukrainian blood. They probably even see it as moral, because in the end this is probably more of a long term total victory that will keep Russia out of Ukrainian for decades instead of a quick KO that allows for Russia to lick it's wounds and maybe come back in a decade or so to try to finish the job.

The more Biden plays the “what the fuck are you gonna do about it?” card, the better imo.

Putin is a bully that just needs to be punched in the nose hard enough, that it lets him know “fear of escalation” isn’t the trump card it once was…and he won’t be allowed to keep using it at motivation to keep pushing the boundaries further and further.

There's no escalation left aside from nukes.

They've already bombed civilians to the best of their ability, tortured POWs, shot their own retreating soldiers, etc.

The only escalation left is nuclear and they're not going there. They know they aren't and we know they aren't.
