OT: World Politics

Almost half of their government debt is denominated in foreign currency (mostly ¥) and they have have low foreign currency reserves, they would further tank the lira to build that up.

They were/are very vulnerable to… an increase in US interest rates. This could be seen from a mile away.

The left shouldn’t be seen as “we don’t care about borders”

That is definitely a thing a lot of far lefties believe though. That national borders shouldn’t be a thing and all the Western countries have a moral responsibility to throw their doors open to everyone.

There is a legitimate moral dissonance required in the application of border controls, immigration and refugee admission. Governments are choosing to put resources towards citizens to help them go from a 4 to a 6 over helping immigrants go from a 1 to a 4. All be virtue of winning the birth lottery and being born in the right place. I'm not disagreeing with this practice, and I've benefited hugely by it, but philosophically I think it's ...complex.

Just reviewing the Checklist for Putin's invasion of Ukraine:

- Make the EU Stronger - check
- Encourage more countries to join the EU - check
