OT: World Politics

I mean, Turkey joined NATO two years before Erdogan was born, so I’m not sure how much he had to do with them getting in…
fair point. I considered looking up when they joined before making that post, and in hindsight should have followed that instinct. oh well.

and I guess Erdogan was not always a despot and autocrat. he came to power legitimately.

And I guess for a long time, Turkey was a pretty secular and free democratic country. But like a lot of places around the world (and moreso than most), they’re backsliding into autocracy.

Yeah I visited Istanbul back in 2012. Then some places I visited were targeted in terror attacks. Quite the fall from grace, and its a real shame cause its a really cool and unique country and culture.

But there had to be a cynical or unethical streak to transform a political opportunity into nationalist authoritarianism.

Obama, Merkel and even David “Meathead” Cameron were also a political opportunists, but they never sought to be authoritarians a la Orban, Berlusconi and Erdogan.
