OT: WWE/MMA/Boxing Thread

I don't need another reason to dislike Leon. Losing to Colby and allowing that fuck to be an actual champion would turn my stomache.

I really need to see khamzat get in there with him.

Endeavour, the parent company of UFC, is set to buy the WWE. They will then merge WWE/UFC into a new combat sports entertainment company.

Deal is set to be announced tomorrow.

I don't think it's that big of a deal, honestly. At least not for people who watch the WWE.

Has the UFC really gone to shit since Endeavor bought it? Not really. It's pretty much been par for the course.

The WWE (from what I've read) has actually improved significantly since Vince fucked off and let people who aren't nearing the end of their life handle things. I doubt Endeavor's going to buy it, tell all those people to beat it & replace them with others. They'll keep it exactly as is and let 'em do their work.

I don't see how it's possible that what the WWE is doesn't bleed into the UFC here. They're not being run as seperate entities, but as different divisions in the same pubco. There will be significant crossover of people within the organization who wear hats in both divisions.

Probably, but the UFC never stopped any of its fighters from making cameos or actively doing pro wrestling. Hell, they got ton of their fighters actively participate in jiu jitsu competitions, from ADCC, to EBI, to Polaris.

Most famously was Ronda Rousey, but a bunch of fighters from ATT like Jorge Masvidal ended up doing shit for AEW.

If anything, it'll get some older fighters nearing retirement that are good talkers a transition into some sort of athletic competition that doesn't require head trauma. Would have been perfect for Chael Sonnen a decade ago.

I'd be shocked if any wrestlers, beyond Brock Lesnar, actually went the MMA route... And even then, he'll probably get a nice check to fight on UFC 300 and that'll be all for him.

Chael said he went to the WWE academy and I believe was not picked in the end to proceed

Chael had done a few things with pro wrestling.

The first thing he did was those old WCW boot camps that Sgt. Slaughter used to run and it was basically just a physical endurance competition to see who would last the longest, and he ended up making it. Those who made it would then get an invitation to a real WCW camp, but WCW closed up shop before that ever happened. That's when he went into MMA instead.

Then later on, there was interest in getting into pro wrestling, but they had told him that at 31 (or around there) he was too old for someone with no experience in pro wrestling to start and ever get anywhere.

If Chael was at his peak today, circa 2012 / 2013 when he fought Anderson Silva? God, he'd be an amazing pro wrestler with his mic skills alone.

When you're such an egomaniac that you literally believe that you're God's personal gift to the earth, not to mention cognitively declining rapidly with age, of course you think you look fine and above reproach.

…not to mention Dana basically aped Vince’s business model from day one. He’s always been heavily influenced by Vince & the WWE.

To your main point tho, there will now be a ton of layoffs to cut costs, and they’ll share marketing departments, production staff, etc etc.

The UFC has already been pretty horrible at promoting fighters who weren't cartoon characters already. I expect this issue to get worse as the marketing department of the larger entity starts to get its hooks into the UFC

And yeah, Dana has been stealing Vinces business model for over a decade now.

There will definitely be cross promotion, especially when it comes to publicity of the next events. What I don't think will happen is pro wrestlers, beyond Brock Lesnar for UFC 300, coming over to the UFC. I could see some older MMA fighters slowly transition into some sort of role in pro wrestling, though.

One thing that might be interesting to see: What the UFC & WWE do with their streaming apps.

The WWE basically runs everything through their streaming app, while the UFC has moved towards streaming while still having their product on ESPN and the occasional ABC card.

The UFC's deal with ESPN ends in, I believe, 2026. Could the UFC & WWE merge their streaming service into a sort of Disney+ but for fighting sports and keep everything exclusively there, while still running PPVs? Or is the presence on ESPN too important to just give up so that they can have sole custody of their product?
