OT: WWE/MMA/Boxing Thread

An excellent breakdown of the fight. Makes a good case that Romero should be to blame for the inaction and not Adesanya.

No fans, all fights at the UFC Apex. Seems like a pretty reasonable precaution level tbh as long as it's accompanied by anyone travelling to location getting tested before they leave, etc.

yeh, I agree - no big issues here.

hope Aldo comes through and beats the shit out of Cejudo. Break his jaw so he can’t talk for a few months about his Olympics medal

It's some sort of weird combination of bad real person and unconvincing WWE character rolled up into one cringey AF package.

I've rewatched the DJ fight 3-4 times now and he just didn't fucking win it, that's the part that maybe irks me the most. On top of being a twat, he's illegitimate as flyweight champ.

If all it was, was just the fights themselves, I think I'd have no issue with it.

However, that's only a small part of it. The weight cutting is even more dangerous than before. You'll have fighters who will cut upwards of 20 pounds (Kevin Lee missed weight this morning), which will make them weaker and with the virus already attacking their immune system...

Another big problem is that, unlike the unionized players in the NHL/NFL/NBA/etc., UFC fighters don't get paid if they don't fight. A lot of them make little money to begin with, and a lot of the money they receive goes back into paying their camps. And then, some of them have their own gyms to teach on their spare time (because fighting isn't enough to make a good living) and what are they going to do if they close their gyms for a bit?

The fighters are knees deep in shit.

Anyone order ufc fight channel before? Worth getting for a month to have something to watch (like watching Muay Thai etc)?

If you like fighting, absolutely. 100%. There's a loooooot of good content. If I still had the time, I'd pay for it every month.

Watch old shows of Glory & Lion Fights for kickboxing, RFA & ACB for MMA. EBI & whatever else they have for jiujitsu. They have some other martial arts there too. Hell, if you want to go oldschool, go watch some of the mid-2000s Pride tournaments.

Thanks. Guess if it’s month to month will gi

Was one of the weird kids that watched pride back in the day when we were stealing direct tv and found it. Be fun to rewatch it.

And don’t really see gyms closing. My Thailand, Australian and NYC gyms all announced they will remain open. Fighters will just keep fighting, I guess. Same as I don’t see GoodLife closing shop, prob just do more deep cleans of the equipment each night etc

Yeah, I agree with all of that actually.

I would cancel the fights, but I totally understand why the UFC is the only professional sports "league" in the North America that is going to continue with their shows. They need money and they don't give a crap about the fighters. They never have and never will.

Read this about the latest on the UFC's finances: https://www.bloodyelbow.com/2020/2/...ng-300-million-dividend-to-pay-company-owners

Hopefully this finally acts as the tipping point for a fighters union. Way overdue.

I'm not being hyperbolic when I say this, but... I'd be surprised if it happens in my lifetime.

If there was ever a tipping point, it was when the UFC sold for $4B. Dana White got approximately $300M from that deal. The UFC not too long after signed a deal with ESPN for the shows. In both cases, the fighters got their equal share of $0 each.

The fighters are always looking out for their own interest and couldn't give less of a shit about the next guy. The same applies for every combat sport, which is why boxing isn't unionized and never will be either.

The UFC always pushed back on the "the fighters don't get paid!!" narrative with their usual, Well, you don't know how our business works and you don't really know how much the fighters ACTUALLY make so fuck off! rhetoric. If you would ask them how much they actually paid the fighters, including those "locker room bonuses", they'd say it's none of your business. To quote the great Christopher Hitchens, what can be asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence.

When Randy Couture, Jon Fitch, Nate Quarry, Cung Le & co. brought the UFC to court and we had access to the exact amounts that were paid to the UFC fighters, their cut of the pie was below 20%. If you have the time (and the patience), read John Nash's work on UFC pay. He's written extensively about it on BloodyElbow.
