Out of Town Scoreboard

I'm not saying it's not possible... I just think he's likely on the outside looking in. There is definitely merit to your theory though.

Take a look at some of the bizarre selection camp invites/omissions and even the strange World Junior 25 man camp roster. I don't really understand their thinking process.

I'm with you on Harding being the most deserving possibility based purely on merit though. Awesome character player too.

Worried about a Price starter. If anything he should have a very short leash.

Seen that guy meltdown far too many times.

Agreed. I'm okay with having one talented but unstable goalie on the team, but if they are insistent on taking Luongo they need to be careful. Personally, I would go with:

Ward (calm and clutch)
Crawford (proven winner)
Price (playing the best)

Ward and Luongo simply don't belong in the conversation for team canada. They haven't even been average NHL goalies in quite a while now.

Last 2yrs:

Luongo: 44gms, .909sv%
Ward: 31gms, .908sv%

Last 3yrs:

Luongo: 99gms, .915sv%
Ward: 99gms, .913sv%

Even their NHL teams should be searching for an upgrade in net, never mind Team Canada.

Forgot about Crawford. He could end up being the starter. He's got the oh-so-valuable playoff experience and pedigree, and is really lighting it up this year.

If I had to pick today, I'd probably go (in no order) Price, Crawford, Fleury. Assuming that Fleury would play exactly 0 minutes.

crawford has a .913sv% this year, and no shutouts.

last year is the only year of his career over .917, and that was a shortened season.

On merit, the two shoo-ins should be Price and Holtby right now.

the third spot should be up for debate.

Based on merit, they don't belong on the team. But especially in net, Team Canada seems to like nothing better than to pick big "name" goalies. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see both on the team.

Who else do we have?

I think it will be Luongo by default.

Out of the 17 Canadian goalies who've started at least 10 games this season, Luongo ranks 11th in save percentage. Last year, if we looked at Canadian goalies that started at least half their team's games, Luongo wouldn't even make the list, as he only started 20 out of Vancouver's 48 games. But if we counted him anyways, he'd rank 8th out of 10 Canadian goalies.

There are plenty of better choices. If Luongo's our "default" starter because of his name and the fact that he had the job last time, then we deserve to lose.

I'm not so certain. Team Canada tends to familiarize themselves and become beholden to certain players and Ward strikes me as one of those select players who has ingratiated himself with Hockey Canada's management for whatever reason.

He's been a mainstay on squads from the World Juniors all the way up to multiple World Championship appearances. Just a hunch on my part with no real other reasoning behind it. The Stanley Cup pedigree likely contributes to his perceived value too as does the Conn Smythe win for obvious reasons.

It's a hunch but I would argue based on solid reasoning. Hockey Canada rewards guys who go to Europe after their teams are out or often puts guys on the team for odd social engineering reasons like Bertuzzi who was coming off a suspension for almost killing someone. Zamuner also comes to mind.

Nothing surprises me with Hockey Canada anymore.

They're gonna pick Luongo, and if he falters in round robin, Price may get a chance to take the job.

Hockey Canada is very stubborn ...

Price
Luongo
Holtby/Reimer/Bernier

Price as your starter, Luongo as the experienced backup and then a good young goalie that they traditionally take as the 3rd stringer for the experience.

Cam Ward, outside of one season (and one playoff run nearly a decade ago now) has been average to below average through out his career. Crawford is an average starter at best. Harding is a nice feel good story, but his body of work is tiny as he's spent most of his career as a backup.
