Playoff GDT: Round 2, Game 2 Canes v. Flyers 5/4 7:00

Yeah, they’re just not in touch with reality. They bitched about Game 1 pretty loudly and they had 34 power play minutes. What do you want? 5 on 4 for the entire game?

And FWIW, my complaints are not so much about balance of the calls between the teams as what they’re allowing the teams to get away with in terms of obstruction. Although, Dvorak can take that little head snap of his and stick it up his backside. I can't believe he got away with that crap twice in one game.

It's funny to hear Flyers fans complaining about the officiating today. I guess what, a dozen or more power plays wasn't enough?
The refs' inconsistency allowed the Flyers to get away with constant hooking and grabbing, but complainers are gonna complain, regardless of the situation.

After the first game's self-inflicted high stick, you'd think the refs would be all over these shenanigans, but the wild flopping was allowed to continue.

That first one last night would have been funny if it wasn’t a playoff game. Svech got his stick up around the NHL logo on his Dvorak’s jersey and he took two full beats before deciding to sell it HARD and see if he could get Charron to bite. Honestly, that was late in the 2nd and set the tone for a lot more simulation by both teams in the 3rd before everybody got serious about playing actual hockey in OT. That dumb call led directly to all that BS with guys running into the goalies as things escalated. Exactly the kind of effect that bad officiating can have on a game.

Charron is a clown, BTW. He has zero business working meaningful games but there’s so few decent NHL refs that he’s got well over a 100 playoff games under his belt.

What I liked about that game was the fact this team is not in their heads and better equipped to work through rough patches. I suspect there are multiple factors at play—mindset, depth, talent, skill and confidence. The real intangible is mindset and resilience.

Something to keep an eye on for Thursday. Noah Cates suffered an apparent foot injury. He was seen in the locker room with a walking boot.

That would be a big blow if he can’t play. He’s been a remarkably consistent shift-winner for them over the last 3-4 years. He doesn’t score a bunch but he doesn’t get beat much either. Plus, he’s been holding down that cobbled together 3rd line for them regardless of who else they dump down there with him … usually Foerster and a guest winger. In Game 2, that’s where they stashed Michkov, but sometimes it’s Bump or Barkey when he’s not playing center. He’s also been the puck retriever on their PP1. If he’s out, it also probably pushes up Couturier’s minutes to an uncomfortable level. He’s already well over 20 per night because of special teams usage and he’s been a lot better this season in smaller doses. What the Flyers really need to balance out their lines is to get Tippett back. That’s been killing their balance and they also badly miss his speed.

It still boggles my mind nightly that some of these "officials"...which I will use that term lightly...are allowed to work second round playoffs and the league finds that perfectly ok. These guys are unfit to have any feel or control of a game...even the linesmen yet again spent far too much time last night doing nothing but throwing guys out of the dot, missing calls or just thinking they are the main part of the show...enough of this garbage, the bar gets lowered nightly with no end in sight. With only 8 teams left you would hope that the league has enough credible officials left to work two games a night but apparently even that is too much to ask for finding veteran guys capable enough to do a decent job.

Martone last night goes into the crease on his own hard, makes head contact with Freddy...no call, no goalie interference...Blake gets shoved into Vladar late third...goalie interference. You can argue one guy goes straight in with contact, one guy gets shoved in hard, how is that a way to call a game?

For Carolina, when it comes to health … it was REALLY good to see Jarvis look like himself for the first time this post season. He was obviously laboring through something that restricted his shot, but he looked aggressive and snappy on the puck last night. The goal was nice, but they missed his puck control and ability to drive the net badly while he was scuffling.

Also, it would be great if they could get Nikishin back now. Reilly struggled badly after a strong Game 1, as Philly was able to target him more since they could gameplan for him being a weak link. That pairing with him and Ghost was pretty awful in Game 2.

Edit … seems like Nikishin has been officially cleared from the protocol, which isn’t quite the same thing as announcing that he’ll play but I’ll take it

Gord Dwyer, #19 on your scoresheet, has worked 3 finals (none since 2022) and the Olympic Gold Medal Game.

Francis Charron, #6 on your scoresheet, has also worked 3 finals, most recently the 2025 Final. He and Dwyer both worked the 2021 Final, teaming up in game 3.

Freddie also had to fend off a charge into his crease from Sanheim by protecting himself with his blocker. I think that Sanheim thought Walker (or whoever the D was) would nudge him in so he could get a free shot, but the nudge never came. He got a face full of blocker for his trouble. How that isn’t called some freaking thing, I have no idea. Charron was right there at the goal line, FWIW. That’s just an official being scared to make a call, honestly.

Dwyer isn’t nearly as big a clown as Charron but they both suck … and the fact that they’ve survived to the Finals is 100% an indictment on the state of NHL officiating.

Freddie should have been credited with a hit. Sanheim got the worst of that deal, but you're right - it shouldn't have happened and should have been called.
