You systemically dump your vets ahead of time to soften the rebuild process and potentially avoid a multi year gut job , especially if your team
was never close to winning a cup.

Now Calgary had to hand out bad contracts to save face and are stuck for years with aging vets , no top prospects and spinning their wheels

Exactly. The problem is that the GM's of these middling teams (and some of their fans) refuse to acknowledge when they are becoming garbage. They look at a 9th place finish like it means they're close to being a contender when in fact it means that they need to gut the roster and rebuild. These band-aid, four quarters for a loonie moves, Bergevin's specialty, will get you to 8th or 9th if things break right, but it doesn't change the fact that your team is still shit and a full tear-down is required. But GM's in markets where they need to sell tickets (like Winnipeg) have no choice but to sell fans on the delusion that all they need to do is tweak things. The Habs, which are a license to print money, don't have that excuse. If any franchise can afford to admit reality and say "Fuck the fans. We need to rebuild" it's this one.

To be clear that’s not what Toffoli said, he’s looking for a longterm deal and assurances there’s no rebuild

the biggest mistake you can make is resign a player like TT in his 30`s to term on a team heading for a retool/rebuild

Nice fit for a contender looking for scoring depth this year
