Shane Wright

I'm not sure I would call him a project. Looks like he had huge upside, but I feel he also has a lower floor than Wright.

Bottom line, no matter who we take, we need them to become close to what their potential is. If we take Wright and he flops it will be devastating. If we take Slaf and he flops it would also be devastating... but I'd rather take the consensus #1 and be wrong, than be wrong about someone else.
The Canadiens have to get this one right, pardon the pun, or the rebuild will be set back by at least three years.

He's 6'4 220 lbs. If he was so good that he was worth taking over a guy with Wright's overall body of work... he'd be playing more.

Don't get me wrong, he is probably an excellent player and he'll probably be a heckuva NHL player. I'm just going to need someone to earn more TOI for me to get excited about taking them at #1.

Koivu had 10 points in 46 games in his draft year on that team.

If Koivu had been drafted 1st overall I think we would all be agreeing that he was a bust. The level of expectation for a 1OA is different. Koivu had a great career but no one in their "Wright" mind would ever blow the first overall pick on him, and if they did and he actually turned out to be the best player taken that year, it would be one of the worst draft classes in history. I love Koivu but he was not a first line center on any credible contending team.

It's obvious to everyone except McCagg. You never take a winger over a center. So at #1 the choice for Hughes is really between Wright and Cooley and Wright is the superior player IMO, if only because of the number of games he's played and the level of competition compared with Cooley. Slafkovsky is a winger but he's ranked beneath Wright for a reason. Centers are more important pieces than wingers. Wingers are like running backs and wideouts. There's always another one available. Centers are like quarterbacks. Way more valuable.
Speaking of whom… some classics for your Thursday morning perusal…

Now an oldie but a goodie…
