Shane Wright

Whenever I read all this doubt about Wright and stuff about how Slafkovsky is or should be the real 1OA I remind myself of how thankful I am that Bergevin and Timmins don't get to make this pick.

Galchenyuk, Kotkaniemi, Slafkovsky.

I, too, really wish we had the opportunity to take consensus #1 pick Nail Yakupov over Alex Galchenyuk.

Most of the board at the time wanted Galchenyuk at #3, with few exceptions wanting either Forsberg or Grigorenko.

He was the right pick at that time , not a reach

Might of gone 1OA if he didnt blow his knee out

I think he’s smart but far too cautious and timid.

A project should never be taken third overall
Slafkosky appears to be one from what I read so I would not touch him with the 1OA. When your main attribute is your size and not your talent, I can't see why people think he has a shot at being taken instead of wright.

Wright is not going to be Mcdavid but if we get a bergerong/oneil type of center, I'd be OK with this. All I'm reading is he should be better than Suzuki. Some complains about his commitment but that can be corrected, talent can't be tought.

I'm not sure I would call him a project. Looks like he had huge upside, but I feel he also has a lower floor than Wright.

Bottom line, no matter who we take, we need them to become close to what their potential is. If we take Wright and he flops it will be devastating. If we take Slaf and he flops it would also be devastating... but I'd rather take the consensus #1 and be wrong, than be wrong about someone else.

Did Slaf’s team make the playoffs? I’m wondering how many points he put up because it must have been a ton to even consider him over Wright. Anyone know?

18 Playoff games
2 Goals

Let's end this debate. Shane Wright is going to be a Hab but we are all going to buy his jersey from a Chinese site just in case he's a bust.

Why? He’s 18 in a men’s league and apparently didn’t get a lot of prime ice time. Dumb argument.

He's 6'4 220 lbs. If he was so good that he was worth taking over a guy with Wright's overall body of work... he'd be playing more.

Don't get me wrong, he is probably an excellent player and he'll probably be a heckuva NHL player. I'm just going to need someone to earn more TOI for me to get excited about taking them at #1.

Like Laine for instance... put up pretty significant numbers as a 17/18 year old in the same league.

If it was believed that Slaf, at 6'4", 220lbs was a can't miss superstar and future HOFer he would be the unquestioned #1 pick and Wright would be the little talked-about door prize for the team that got the 2nd overall pick. It wouldn't be close, not with a physical specimen like that. He would be the next Lindros.

The fact that Wright, at barely 6 feet tall and average weight, is still the presumptive #1 guy tells us all we need to know. He is the sure thing, not Slaf. Taking Slaf at #2 is no problem but taking him at #1 is a reach.
