Sinclair/Ballys/ESPN/TNT ... broadcasting access, tips and notes

TNT re-signed its whole studio crew: McHugh, Gretzky, Carter, Hank and Biz. Albert and Olczyk return and Brian Boucher joins as an on-ice analyst.

If DirecTV drops them, that probably means the entire AT&T universe too

This comment in the article makes me laugh….

DIRECTV is arguing that since Bally Sports lost several MLB teams, DIRECTV should not be paying the same amount they did when these teams aired on Bally Sports.

I have called DTV (and other carriers in the past) several times over the years when they stopped carrying channels I watched and asked them to lower my bill since I now get less channels. They laughed in my face and somehow raised my rates. Now, THEY want to pay less since Balley’s lost some teams. The irony is not lost on me 🤣

Having my in-law's login for DirecTV is my only TV connection for 'Canes games. If they dump Bally's then I'm not able to watch any 'Canes games like I'm some sort of regular schub around here. I certainly cannot afford the $20/mo subscription fee. How much is Center Ice per season? And if that is the route to take, who will be my tech support d00d to get me set up with a VPN so I can watch 'Canes games?

Stupid capitalism. I call for all out Maoist style communism when it comes to access sports content. Sport fans of the world, UNITE! Share your little red book of Mao's sports quotations!! I call for a sports cultural revolution and we send the sports media executives to work the farm clubs and prospect mines!!

It's like $70 plus the VPN, and depending on just how sketchy you want to be, that could be none dollars.

$70 for all of the regular season with all of the teams (except Hurricanes, of course)? Huh. That seems reasonable.

The NBA and Diamond Sports Group have reached and agreement where the 15 NBA teams that have their games broadcast on a Bally Sports outlet will continue through the end of the season. After this season, the broadcast deals will be terminated regardless of remaining term and the rights will revert back to the NBA. The clubs will also be able to shop up to 10 games to another broadcast partner. In exchange, the league reduced Bally’s fee by 16%. But itensures That no team will be dropped mid season, as happens with the San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks.

Diamond intends to pursue a similar deal with the NHL, where they own the rights to 11 teams.

This is good progress in an area where there's mostly been kicking the can down the road.Hopefully they can get the NHL agreement worked out and then start working to stabilize the broadcasts on the app. I know there's been a lot of issues on Canes broadcasts, but I've seen plenty of complaints from other markets too. Maybe once they don't have to guess at their available budget every week, they can get a handle on QC.

Sinclair is likely to shut down Diamond Sports after the 2024 MLB season.

From what I'm hearing from app users, this is good news for everyone. Just stop already. You clearly can't afford to operate and provide a quality product.

If this has been brought up already, I apologize for my poor memory, but I did not know that the Arizona Coyotes games were on free over-the-air TV (and basic cable). They are currently on a subchannel, but will be moving to a primary channel soon. Moving to a primary channel is great because now streaming services will be able to pick it up and air them. I'm just wondering the cost and logistics of this for EW Scripps. Are they taking a bath on airing Coyotes games or is it profitible for them? Also, are the games blacked out for Phoenix viewers?

The Coyotes TV package got caught up in the collapse of the Diamondbacks deal, but I'm not sure we really talked about it here. The Yotes did what basically every team in that scenario would do, which is to find the cheapest regional partnership to get their games on air ... any air. No idea about the details though.
