Sinclair/Ballys/ESPN/TNT ... broadcasting access, tips and notes

Hulu Live includes sports. Big Ten, CBS Sports, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNEWS, ESPNU, ESPN College Extra, FS1, FS2, Golf Channel, NFL Network, SEC Network
fair enough, I never watch any of those except ESPN. I honestly didn't remember. hahah

Update on my parents ... I took my Roku over to their place and gave them a demo of how it would work if they switched over to purely a streaming experience and ... not happening. Too foreign to them, zero confidence. I did find out however, that they have Samsung smart TVs. So, I'm gonna see if I can get them used to just watching the stuff they're missing on cable (ESPN and ABC basically) on YTTV and leaving everything else like it is. They get their cable as a part of their homeowners dues, so the extra cost isn't that big a deal. They've got 30 days to see if they can figure it out before it costs anything anyway. So, we'll see.

Crisis averted ... they're good to go on Charter/Spectrum. Thanks be to the patron saint of patience, of which I have none. Also, they've moved and now live 10 minutes away, so it could be a lot worse. Also it turns out that two thirds of the codgers in their community already have Netflix through some service or another. So, they have other help desk options closer to hand.

Es verdad

Almost unbelievably, it looks like Disney met them somewhere close to halfway ... agreeing to allow Spectrum subscribers at the 2nd highest tier to have free access to ESPN+ and adding Disney+ to the highest tier. I've got no idea how many of Spectrum's 15 million cable customers have whatever they call their two premium tiers. For all I know it's a couple hundred free logins.

BTW ... Charter/Spectrum are the second biggest cable TV provider in the US and they only have 15 million cable customers. No wonder they've been thinking about dropping linear TV.

As part of the deal, Spectrum was allowed to drop some Disney stations. These stations didn’t make the cut:

Disney Junior
Disney XD
Baby TV
Freeform
FXM
FXX
Nat Geo Wild
Nat Geo Mundo

Disney XD? I assume this means that Disney is planning a direct-to-consumer offering for Hamster & Gretel. I can see no other plausible explanation. 1694477316370.jpeg

I will miss a few shows on NatGeo wild but that’s about it for me. Have been doing a free trial on YouTube TV but not sure if I’ll keep it. Seems about the same to me as spectrum although is a little cheaper. Time to barter with spectrum about my cost I guess. I’m thinking they will be amenable right now.

Losing Disney Junior won't be popular with mothers of pre-schoolers ... but that list absolutely exemplifies the cable system channel creep problem. There was an era when they were competing with satellite and having 100 channels was "better" than having 50. Now they're competing with streaming services and none of it makes any sense. Why are there essentially four basic cable Fox channels? Why does Disney have what amounts to two pre schooler channels and two aimed at tweens and teens? Why are there 3 or 4 Nat Geo channels? None of this makes any sense in the current marketplace.

AT&T and Nexstar must have reached a new agreement, I’m current watching Jim Nantz and Tony Romo call the Cowboys-Dog Assed Jets game.

Edit: it’s temporary, there isn’t a final agreement yet. So it could all fall apart tomorrow. The blackout started on July 2. Nexstar owns nearly 160 local stations, making it the largest owner of TV stations in the US.

Also, FWIW .... Nexstar has been in negotiations with Disney to purchase Disney's legacy local affiliates around the country. That would include WTVD locally. Disney ended up with a handful of local affiliates way back when they purchased Cap Cities/ABC, but that part of the business has always been more awkward than anything else. The first thing Disney did when they took over was to merge the TV and radio affiliates into a single management group. And we're not talking a ton of affiliates ... there's like 8 or 9, including the ABC outlets in NY, Chicago, LA and Houston.

Disney owns 8 stations. In addition to those listed, they own stations in Fresno, Philly, San Francisco and Durham’s own WTVD. Nexstar already owns stations in all 8 markets, so they might have to divest, although there are some markets where they already own multiple stations. For example, in Fresno, they own the NBC and CBS affiliates, I doubt the FCC would allow them to carry the ABC affiliate too.

Live Bleacher Report Sports Tier to Launch on Max in U.S. on Thursday, October 5

WBD Sports’ Premium Live Sports – MLB, NHL, NBA, NCAA Men’s March Madness, U.S. Soccer and More – to Simulcast Live on Max via Bleacher Report Sports Add-On and Continue to Air on TNT, TBS and TruTV

Interesting. For those that do not know, Max is the new(ish) name for HBO*.

Why the hell did Discovery get rid of the HBO brand? So dumb. I mean, talk about your trusted brands.

Bally Sports Needs To Pay About $560 Million Or Lose 14 NBA Teams TV Rights. Bally's will probably just drop the non-profitable teams from their line-up. The same will more than likely be happening with the NHL teams that they have a contract with, but I'm sure that the NBA contracts are worth a lot more money. Perhaps?

Here is the associated video from Cord Cutters News where he mentions that the Orlando Magic said that it would take years to spin up their own production company and be profitable and the deal with Bally's *is* profitable for them right now.

Yeah, I've read a lot on this subject and nobody seems to know what the actual situation is with specific individual market profitability for Ballys for any of their contracts, across all sports. Think about it ... it's a matter of scale. People act like it's obvious that Ballys would walk away from the Diamondbacks contract because they suck or whatever ... but that's still a huge market and I'd bet their production costs in a right to work state like AZ are a heck of a lot less than they are to broadcast the Angels or whatever. And from the team side, yeah ... Orlando is profitable because they get paid something and all they have to do is pay part of the broadcast team's wages. Big whoop. Something is better than nothing. The question isn't profitability for the teams, it's whether or not they're getting what they should for the broadcast rights.

Yep, and I think that Bally's is finding out that they paid way above what market value actually was.

I said when Sinclair brought in Ballys that unless they made some sort of connection with their sports book business, this was a guaranteed boat anchor of a deal. For Ballys it was a gamble ... for Sinclair it was insanity.
