Sinclair/Ballys/ESPN/TNT ... broadcasting access, tips and notes

It looks like you can now order or subscribe to the FanDual South Sports network channel through the Amazon Prime Video app. It still appears to be $19.99 a month with a seven day free trial.
I saw that. I was kinda hoping for a Prime member price break, but I guess they're still busy paying off that massive consumer fraud settlement.

Just remember, you HAVE to unsubscribe through the same provider you used to sign up. And given how hard Prime Video makes it to unsubscribe from anything, you might want to go direct through the FanDuel app. Especially if there's no price difference.
 
But if it's the same cost and you already have access to the games on your TV/mobile device, why switch providers?

Clarity ... I'm just activating a service/app. My choice is activating through Prime as an add-on or directly through the FanDuel app. I already have Prime.

On my LG TV, there is no app for FanDuel Sports Network, and the imbedded web browser won't recognize it, either. (I called LG customer support, and they confirmed that it's blocked.) So, last season, my options for Bally/FanDuel on a screen bigger than my laptop were either casting it from my phone (bad) or connecting the laptop to the TV via an HDMI cable (worse). So I was ecstatic to realize a couple of days ago that I could subscribe via Prime.

Why is casting from your phone bad? I cast all kinds of sports from my phone and it’s 4K

Yeah, that's the real upside with this development. While a lot of people struggle with random streaming apps or resent having to add yet another one just to watch Canes games, Amazon Prime has already accomplished market penetration FanDuel couldn't even dream about. And for fans who care about the financial health of the team, that's good news.
 
I agree with JB that as a Prime existing customer that already pays $150 annually for the Prime membership, that a bit of a price discount to add the Fan Dual sports app would have been the right thing to do...adding $20 a month on with next to no other programming on that Fan Dual South platform other than Canes games and Hornets basketball (no thanks) is borderline criminal. The fact that the channel is dark most of the time is awful, at least provide something extra with substance beyond just the 2-3 games a week.

Today I saw an offer that drops the price down to $108.99 for the season and takes the subscription to May 1st, 2026 for Fan Duel Sports South. Works out to be around $15.50 a month so almost a $5 a month savings. I went ahead and renewed for the season at that price point.

In the continuing saga of the Ballys and Fan Duel production hiccups comes a new story in The Athletic today mentioning Fan Duel will employ a cost cutting decision effective immediately that will see most production being moved to an in house production hub in Denver instead of production trucks on site at game venues. Most Fan Duel staff apparently were not impressed with the move and said the game day presentation will probably get worse…my only question…how much lower can the bar go?

A piece from the article:
“The changes are a cost-cutting measure that threaten the quality of nightly telecasts, alleged nine FanDuel SN workers who were granted anonymity to speak freely about their employer. Typically, FanDuel stations have produced games from a truck situated at or near the game’s venue.”

LOL. I saw the phrase "get worse" and literally did a spit take. The bar is already on the floor fellas.

And yet, because it's the only way to watch most road games, they once again have my money.
 
The big professional sports earn most of their money off TV revenue, but I think hockey still gets most of its revenue from ticket sales. Until the hocky viewership changes in "new" markets like ours, we're doomed to poor quality options.

I've said it before, but unless broad consumer cable networks make a comeback, unlikely but not impossible due to existing infrastructure, eventually we're probably going to land in a direct to consumer model once the regional sports networks sputter out their last breaths.
