Summer 2024/January 2025 Transfer Thread

I've never heard of a "double transfer" involving life partners before.

Alisha Lehmann Transfers to Juventus
Yeah, it's unusual to be sure. Lehmann was looking for a transfer either way, as she had played her way out of Villa's plans going forward. Good that she could latch on with Juve. Honestly, she brings a bit of a circus atmosphere everywhere she goes but is a relatively low impact player. I'm not saying Alisha is a distraction, but it's weird for engagement when a player has like four times as many Instagram followers as the club.

BTW, no comments on the move of Ian Maatsen from Chelsea to Aston Villa? I like the dude; think he could be a big asset to Villa.

Ian Maatsen Move to Aston Villa

Guess it slipped my mind to bring it up here. I am a big fan of this move. I kind of assume this means that we have plans to move Lucas Digne on as his salary is absurd (I just need to remind myself that Gerrard got us Kamara and helped show our ambition as a club which probably helped us get Emery every time I think about every other thing he did during his time as manager). Maatsen seems to be able to provide the pace and attack that Moreno did for us, but is much better at crossing and switches of play. I also like that he's 22, so we're paying for his prime years instead of overpaying for someone's post prime years like we did for Digne, Carlos and Coutinho.

Man U has agreed terms to send Mason Greenwood to Marseille. But he hasn’t agreed personal terms yet. It’s £23.3 million with £3.4 million in add-ons and a sell on fee. He played at Getafe on loan last season. He hasn’t played for Man U since January 2022 when charges were brought for attempted rape, assault, and coercive control before being dropped.

Aston Villa is moving to re-sign Jaden Philogene after selling him to Hull last year. They inserted a clause into the contract whereby they have the right of first refusal if Hull try to move him. Hull received an offer of £18 from Ipswich and Villa activated the clause to buy him back, less the 30% sell on fee. Palace, Everton and West Ham are also pursuing him.

Yeah, I thought I had commented on Maatsen to Villa when it was first reported, but maybe not. I like the move a lot, although it certainly isn't cheap. Digne's wages are WAY too high for what he does, even though he's a positive contributor, and Moreno just can't stay healthy. They needed to move Digne but couldn't because they didn't have quality cover ... now they do.

I love the move to bring back Philogene as well, especially if they can get it done for the money they got in the Kellyman transfer. That's basically a like for like swap, only Villa are getting the version of the player that has already found success at the Championship level.

Rumors of Diaby going to Saudi Arabia. I have to believe it won't happen cause it just doesn't make any sense. I know he's a devout Muslim, but he's 25 and just signed last year.

In positive news, Philogene has signed a five year contract and is returning to Villa. We're starting to stockpile dynamic wingers, which is kind of exciting.

IMO, if Diaby is going to bail for big bags of cash, it would be better for him to have played well in Champions League first. This would be the dumbest time for him to leave Villa.

And yeah, they basically waived a wand and turned Kellyman into Philogene. I loved Kellyman's promise, but Philogene is basically the same player 2 years further down the development path.

It's kind of interesting that the only "big six" team we deal with is Chelsea. Over the past few years we've made a bunch of transfers with them and unless I'm forgetting something, none with any of the others. The weird thing is it's been them buying our raw not quite ready prospects and us buying their more tested ones.

Amadou Onana has apparently been signed by Villa from Everton almost out of nowhere. I did feel like we still needed another defensive midfielder since Kamara is still recovering from ACL surgery and he was forced to play far too many matches last season since we truly had nobody else to effectively fill his role. I feel really good about the level of depth we have going into the season and I do hope that means we plan on doing a lot more squad rotation than we did last season.

Onana is a work in progress still, but he took a huge step in his development this past season. I think eventually he could play more of that box to box role that Emery likes for the two more advanced MFs. If nothing else, he can run for days and cover a ton of ground and the system should suit him. It's an expensive bet, but probably a good one.

More of post transfer news, but I watched Villa's match against Walsall and while it's hard to really judge since they're playing against guys who most likely will never sniff the championship let alone the prem in their premiers, I really liked what I saw from Nedeljkovic, Barranechia and Illing Jr. Kosta looks more than physically able to deal with the prem with his size and speed and Barranechia was controlling the match completely with his passing. Who knows if either actually are on the team or end up loaned out, but it's nice to see a new player and be impressed.

Morgan Rogers also looks poised to take a big step up. He showed plenty of signs of being close to breaking out last year, to the point where it was easy to forget that he's only 21 and still maturing physically.

Yup, unfortunately for me, I wasn't able to find a working feed until around the 40 minute mark so I missed the majority of his play. Glad I didn't pay for the feed, because boy was the quality crap and apparently that was true of the legitimate feed as well. Every move that Emery and Monchi have done since coming seems to be a banger other than the two desperation loans last season of Lenglet and Zaniolo, but when two key players have ACL tears to start the season, what can you do? I'm really happy that Weston decided to both not underplay his worth and also feels no loyalty to Juve for obvious reasons so that Barranechia is here instead. McKennie would probably be the better option this season obviously, but Barranechia I have to assume is much cheaper and has higher future potential.

Honestly, Onana fills that immediate gap better than McKinnie anyway and has a better history in the EPL. I'm also happy that deal got sidetracked. Barranechia looks like a good long term investment and Onana was expensive but kind of a sure thing. Meanwhile Rogers and McGinn both have huge engines and when Kamara gets back, you're playing with real depth up the middle for the first time in a long, long time.

Never get your transfer news from YouTube……they had a deal done between Liverpool and Leny Yoro at least 6 different times since the window opened. Total BS, Yoro signed officially with Manchester United today. Of course YouTube has said that Liverpool had done deals with at least 20 different players so far this summer but the team has not announced any signings officially yet.

If you aren't too familiar with international soccer transfer time, it is just filled with a level of rumors and misinformation that seems almost comical compared to American sports. Some of it is agents putting things out to try to increase the value of their clients, some of it is wild speculation, a lot of it is people just making stuff up and hoping to get something right cause there's no real consequences of being wrong most of the time. There are a couple more reliable sources that don't tend to actually report things until they are at least mostly confirmed, but youtube is obviously just the wild west. There's some great tactical stuff on youtube and FourFourTwo's youtube page might be my favorite soccer related thing that exists, but if you're just looking at fans speculating about signings, they're mostly idiots.

Just like any other platform, there are reliable channels on YouTube and unreliable ones. You just have to be discerning. Same is true with UK newspaper rumor columns, and especially UK radio stations/podcasts. I've seen some wild crap from the UK press over the years.

Mason Greenwood is off to Marseille for £27.6 million with £4 million adds-ons. The agreement also has a sell on fee. He had t played for Man U since being arrested in January 2022 after being charged with attempted rape. The charges were eventually dropped. He played on loan with Getafe last season.
