Tech Thread

I mean open source means source code is free to use though there are different os licenses that can be more or less permissive. Which os license is attached?

i guess i'm just suspicious that they're lying about it. i don't know near enough about the tech to understand what true open source would be when it comes to AI.

I'll let you know...in the middle of feeding Deep Seek all of the zeke Forum Ice posts in order to create a user who can post reliably 24 hrs per day...will try to add a slight Habs bias while I'm at it

"R1 stands out for another reason. DeepSeek, the start-up in Hangzhou that built the model, has released it as ‘open-weight’, meaning that researchers can study and build on the algorithm. Published under an MIT licence, the model can be freely reused but is not considered fully open source, because its training data has not been made available.

“The openness of DeepSeek is quite remarkable,” says Mario Krenn, leader of the Artificial Scientist Lab at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light in Erlangen, Germany. By comparison, o1 and other models built by OpenAI in San Francisco, California, including its latest effort o3 are “essentially black boxes”, he says."

So the answer seems to be - open source code, but not open training data (which is a big deal), but also much more open source than something like OpenAI.

Open Source is a pretty simple bar, either way. Either the code is publicly available for anyone to download and do bug fixes, patches, create new features, use as an architecture for new creations, etc, or it isn't.

If they're lying about it being open source, we'll know very very quickly as the open source community (which is maaaassive) starts working it's way through the code, line by line.

The benefits to open source are pretty obvious. Hundreds of thousands of skilled coders working on iterations of the software 24 hours a day forever to make it better. There's no corporation in the world that can compete with that in the long term.

but especially when it comes to AI, aren't there different types or different levels of "source code" ?

I haven’t played around with it yet ….
But the market is having a mini crash this am even though it hasn’t been verified that deep seek is using cheaper chips. Nvidia and competing chip makers are down 10%

Market was due for a correction… the Trump oligarch bump was running on fumes

Not right away.

True story. I had a bunch of cheapo Spy puts expiring today. paid .20 cents for them…..saw them slip to .02 cents Friday.

Will sell them at the open for much higher… around $2

what is the real investment difference between the big AIs and deepseek?

Is it really like $70b vs $5m?
