The 2019-2020 MotherFucking Season Thread

I haven't read through the thread, but are they planning on lowering the cap or just leaving it where it is? Because I can't imagine how they'd lower it unless they're scaling back salaries to go along with it. We shouldn't have to shed players because of this bullshit virus. And if every team near the cap has to do that, where are those players going to go, to the cash strapped teams trying to stay near the floor?

As far as I've seen, I haven't seen any discussion about the cap getting lowered.

Most of the discussion seems to be around the idea of keeping the cap at its current level for 2-3 years.

Thing is, I’d imagine every team built their roster with some expectation of a rising cap. If the majority of teams have to drop a few players, those players have to go somewhere, and it’s not like the handful of teams with room have no young players of their own ready to graduate into big deals and can absorb a bunch of expensive or semi expensive players. They may need to allow teams to go over the cap and pay a luxury tax or something.

Compliance buyouts on the horizon , AKA why the hell did you give out this shit contract to this player for

You dont need a luxury tax , you need common sense

81 mil is plenty of money to figure out how to make 20 players millionaires

They said no compliance buyouts.

And there better not be, because that would screw the leafs the worst. Leafs don't have any contracts to compliance-buyout.

It’d be pretty typical for the NHL to bring in compliance buyouts the summer after had to burn a 1st round pick to dump a bad contract, and when we’ve got no other contracts left that we’d want to buyout.

Sort of how they brought in compensation for executives right before we hired Babcock & Lou, and got rid of it after we’d paid out draft picks for them.

Since the cap isn’t going down though, I don’t think it’s going to happen.

Still offers you the ability to walk away

Lets say JT does a Jaime Benn and shits the bed after next year , who says no to 11 mil off your cap ?

What if he slips to 70 points and shows another 1/2 step lost , ME will call Dubas to buy him out

Couldn't they just trade for a player on a bad contract from a team that doesn't have the cash, then use their compliance buyout on that guy? Might get a good pick or something.

There will be teams that have to have cap lower than they previously did due to $$$. I can't imagine how bad the finances are with teams like the Panthers and Coyotees.

Would be pretty nifty to get out of the back 3yrs on the contract.

Would be even better if we were allowed to re-sign him after a buyout.

I bet 10 teams are royally fukcd in the States

Remember its not just hockey the fantasy world , many owners have their businesses tied to the service other industries smashed right now

I cant see gate sales flourishing even if venues open up in a year

There is no doubt these gm`s that fukckd up want some excuse to undue their errors even if it costs their owners money

but this team has no errors to undo.

Even the one you suggested forces us to lose a 31yr old 1st line center.

It would be badly unfair to us to let other teams shed truly bad contracts right when we've cleaned up our mess.

last time the buyouts made sense because the cap was new and many contracts were pre-cap or early-cap.... but letting teams off the hook for contracts signed now seems dumb.

maybe they could just let each team choose one player to pay all money up front and then lower the caphit by half.

No different know , you think Dubas was handing half the cap to 4 players if he thought the cap in 2023 was 81 mil and not 92 ?

Yes, I think he probably still would have.

I’m sure he was hoping to have more room to work with, but rising cap or no, I think the plan was always going to be “pay the young stars & fill in the rest of the roster as best you can through the draft, player development & UFA’s”.
