The 2019-2020 MotherFucking Season Thread

I said we spent 10 million on those guys and didn't get great value...all had big scoring droughts when the season stopped.

you disagree?

This was all before covid and the flat cap.

If the cap is flat and we dump Ceci and Barrie, and nobody seems to be in line for a big salary jump, and only Dermott left to sign, why do we have to lose anyone at all?

Moving Marner is a bad idea.

I say we keep our elite talent and move some of the mid tiered guys. Been a while since I looked but aren’t we looking pretty good from a cap perspective heading into the offseason?

You probably won’t ever get me to disagree that Marner doesn’t represent a “value contract”. It was obvious from day one that he got well overpaid, relative to comparable players around the league (and on his team).

But that still doesn’t mean that dumping his salary in a quality for quantity trade ASAP is either necessary at the moment, or will in any way lead to improving this hockey team.

I was almost all-in on trading Marner before ONLY because I really believed they'd get superior super elite value in return due to believing his reputation had more value than what I believe he brought to the table (not a line driver or a particular great 5 on 5 hockey player but I felt his raw numbers and reputation would garner a crazy return). But with the stagnant cap his contract looks even less appealing and any trade for fair value would be almost impossible without taking a big contract in return, which kind of defeats the point. Plenty of teams will line the fuck up to get him, but his trade value definitely takes a hit from that news.

And that was okay, as long as it was only for a season or two while the cap caught up. That was the whole point.

Now that's all out the window.

I'm on the opposite end of this. I liked the idea of trading Marner until now. I no longer think they can get adequate value for him in any trade.

But if I'm Dubas, it's of course a conversation worth having. All it takes is one team to blow their brains out.

Why, though?

I can see the argument that Marner’s contract could very well end up forcing him off this team at some point down the road. Some of us were making that argument before the cap went flat.

But in the short & near-term, what’s changed, exactly? What’s the pressure point that’s making it so that dumping his contract “has to be done now”?

Good post , but the appeal would be to nab potential young star talent in return in a multi package deal

He would fetch a hell of a return IMO

But very unlikely to be equivalent or better value than Marner himself. For that reason, I'm out. They don't have enough of a cap issue to warrant trading for lesser value at this point.

As I said, they should absolutely shop around but I suspect his contract becomes a lot less appealing now and his value has likely dropped fairly significantly. So I'd probably try to avoid a trade.

Great idea.

Let’s trade our current young star player for a mystery box! Which might or might not contain a young star player, who in any case almost certainly won’t be as good as the young star player we’d be trading away! It’s win/win!

I dont trade Marner at all or even entertain a move

I dont think his contract is an issue for anyone in this league as money is coming back even with a flat cap

Would you trade Marner for Ottawa`s 3,5 and Brady K if offered ?

Have to say though...as much as I hate the “trade Marner for stuff, because reasons” idea, I am stoked that it’s finally Marner we’re having this discussion about instead of Willy.

Nope.

Give me one single player who’s an upgrade on Marner, or GTFO.

No interest in any “quarter for two dimes & a nickel” type of deal, especially since I reject the notion that it’s necessary for cap reasons.

You’ve got to keep in mind the situation this team is in now, too. We signed Tavares, and our best players are in their primes. Now’s the time to try and win, not dump a 23 year-old 90-point forward for a 50-point winger with upside and two draft picks.
