The 2019-2020 MotherFucking Season Thread

and a reminder, even with Freddy struggling this year, we were still a ~103pt pace team with him in net.

We were a very good to fringe elite team through any stretch of the season we didn't receive epic tire fire goaltending during.

There have been some ugly moments. Let's be fair here. Yes, no team is perfectly consistent but these guys can go from looking like cup favorites one night, to losing to a zamboni driver the next. They are definitely a notch below the Tampa's and Boston and probably a touch below the Blues, Avs and maybe Knights as well (I'm admittedly a Knights ball licker).

But the thing is we know they can flip a switch and look like world beaters. Hell they have in every single playoff series in the last 3 years. So maybe the inconsistency thing is not as important as the media makes it out to believe.

Seems the player, coach and executive didn't give much of a crap about any of that.

maybe it was a Western org that doesn't play them often.

These guys are morons. Remember the guy who told Friedman he'd bet his house Lou was offersheeting Marner out of revenge? There was also an exec who got the rules about being over in the summer with the cap wrong.

Rank differentials between those rankings and the standings:

WPG +7
TOR +5
CGY +3
TBL +2
LVK +2
NSH +1
ARZ +1
CHI +2
STL --
WSH --
PIT --
EDM --
MTL --
COL -1
CAR -1
DAL -1
VAN -1
BOS -2
NYR -2
MIN -2
PHI -3
CBJ -3
NYI -3
FLA -3

So whether they know it or not these rankere are actually agreeing with us that the Leafs are more underrated by the standings than most any other team.

Of course, why they (subconsciously?) think WPG is underrated is a bit of a mystery, imo, given that Helle had to play out of his mind to even get them into 20th.

One of the reasons they liked WPG was because they are "big bodied", whereas the leafs were criticized as "small".

Engvall should have a spot over goat

Yep. Especially since he’s spent some time at center too, and you’d also have Spezza on that line.

I wonder if he came in a little lackadaisical. Seems weird he's on the outside given he's arguably been better than any of those 4th liners this year and is a good PKer.

I dunno. Except for a brief stretch not too long after Keefe took over, Goat’s had an ironclad hold on a regular roster spot.

I think Keefe & Dubas both have as much of a soft spot for Goat as Babcock did.

Keefe gives him tiny minutes tho, doesn't use him on the pk, never moves him up the lineup.

He gives engvall plenty of opportunity and dubey rushed out to give him bigger contract than freddy has ever had (for good reason imo)

I agree with everything Zeke is saying, but I've also come to grips with the fact that the media is incapable of anything other than trolling Leaf fans. That's their entire purpose in life, to get a rise out of us. I've checked out. Give me hockey back. I'm not interested about the opinions of people I wouldn't hire to shovel my snow.

It's about fucking time, man. I've never seen a fanbase so pre-occupied with their team's media coverage.

Mainstream sports media (like their counterparts in other fields like business) are a lagging indicator. They tell you what happened last year or last week. Full stop. Their job is a a lot easier if they repeat as many old cliches as they can.

So the Leafs right now are "a fine collection of individual stars who don't do the little things needed to win", "they are soft", "unproven in the playoffs" "not committed to playing team defense"

As soon as they win a Cup (or make the Final) all those jargon phrases will be replaced by "came of age", "showed their hunger/focus/ commitment", "well coached and the players finally bought in", "Matthews finally become a leader" "great chemistry"

It stems from the general frustration of knowing that it doesn't have to be like this. Of wanting to follow the (copious) coverage of my team, but knowing that they're all just honest idiots or committed wind up merchants.

It just makes it near impossible to talk about a team I've been pretty insanely devoted to for 4 decades now with anyone other than fellow nutters on a comparatively small message board and one close friend (who also posts on the board). It's frustrating because it really doesn't have to be this way.
