It's about fucking time, man. I've never seen a fanbase so pre-occupied with their team's media coverage.
Mainstream sports media (like their counterparts in other fields like business) are a lagging indicator. They tell you what happened last year or last week. Full stop. Their job is a a lot easier if they repeat as many old cliches as they can.
So the Leafs right now are "a fine collection of individual stars who don't do the little things needed to win", "they are soft", "unproven in the playoffs" "not committed to playing team defense"
As soon as they win a Cup (or make the Final) all those jargon phrases will be replaced by "came of age", "showed their hunger/focus/ commitment", "well coached and the players finally bought in", "Matthews finally become a leader" "great chemistry"
Pfft says the guy whose media got Subban a Norris trophy.
which I give zero shits about....I bet you also care which teams sells the most jerseys
also, lol, if you think the one English writer covering the Habs can move mountains
It stems from the general frustration of knowing that it doesn't have to be like this. Of wanting to follow the (copious) coverage of my team, but knowing that they're all just honest idiots or committed wind up merchants.
It just makes it near impossible to talk about a team I've been pretty insanely devoted to for 4 decades now with anyone other than fellow nutters on a comparatively small message board and one close friend (who also posts on the board). It's frustrating because it really doesn't have to be this way.
careful or Count will return
which I give zero shits about...
Yep you gave zero shits about that Norris.
Forgot it even happened until you brought it up.
Will probably forget about it again after dinner.
Why do you need traditional media and their general muppetry?
I filter 98% of that shit out and get more than enough insights from select forumicers, twitter, and a few scribes from The Athletic.
Yep easy to forget when you're using to your team being treated (very very) fairly in the hockey world.
Price is also the best goalie in hockey, you know.
It's not a matter of need. It's a matter of it "would be really fucking nice" if the general conversation regarding my club wasn't fucking ridiculous. It would be really fucking nice if I could speak to a random human being while watching the game and not have them want to trade Nylander.
It's not a matter of where I get my personal insight from, it's a matter of wishing that my overall fan experience could be slightly, just slightly broader and more cultured and not have to turn to the same 20 people over and over again to discuss my team.
This is getting sad. Mainstream media is just another product. If you don't like it, stop consuming it. There are so many options.
Better yet, make your own. Seriously! If Toronto Leaf Media is an order of magnitude worse than average hockey media, you should be able to create something that finds an audience rather quickly.
Truth is following a sports team isn't just about watching hockey. The discussion, the buzz, the anticipation, etc all add to the entertainment value. It's all one big soap opera that macho men act like they're above. Having a fair and intelligent mainstream media would certainly add to that experience. I know we should ignore them but you can fault us for wanting better.
this is a fair, and good, point. It's not a matter of need. It's a matter of it "would be really fucking nice" if the general conversation regarding my club wasn't fucking ridiculous. It would be really fucking nice if I could speak to a random human being while watching the game and not have them want to trade Nylander.

am I wrong in thinking there is an obvious divide between how the English language and French language media portray and deal with the habs?Yes it would be nice....but does that offering exist anywhere?
Despite Zeke's fantasy, a large chunk of Montreal media was very critical of Subban the year he won the Norris, brandishing him as "one-dimensional", "not a team player", "selfish", "a poor decision maker with low hockey IQ".
Keep thinking you have it bad...I've said my piece.
