The Expansion Draft

Oddly enough, it also looks like Kevin Bieksa hasn't been asked to waive his NMC, and it doesn't appear the Ducks are buying him out.

So, you'd have to assume they've got a side deal worked out with Vegas.

Sounds like Phaneuf is not waiving his NMC. Are they actually worried about losing their almost 5M defenseman who got 0 goals last year?
Neither of Ceci or Methot are world-beaters, but they're both more valuable assets than Phaneuf. And they're both far more likely to be selected than Dion.

I'm sure Ottawa fans will be pissed, but I can see where Dion is coming from here. He's 32, and has spent basically his entire career playing for mediocre teams or bottom feeders. And now, right after his first taste of real playoff success, he's being asked to risk spending his next four years for a brand new expansion team that's going to be brutal?

Understandable that he wouldn't be interested, and wouldn't want to risk it.

Its believe ANA has a pre-arranged deal in place with VGK so it isn't necessary to ask Kevin Bieksa to waive his NMC

Yeah, if a player has a NMC, it's his right to enforce it.

But to me, Methot is negative value. At 4.9M per for 2 years, for a guy who's only putting up 12 points a year the last couple years. If I were Ottawa, I'd leave him unprotected and hope he gets claimed.

Wonder what the cost is to get Vegas to agree not to take Manson and Vatanen. You'd think it has to be significant.

If this is true, then doesn't the pressure to trade a d-man go away?

I hope VGK is getting an excellent return in these side deals, because they are doing teams a great favour by not having to expose young assets.

I wonder if Mountour or Theodore are used as part of the deal to leave their core players alone

Vegas has a chance to pick up a solid player from the Ducks for free so if they are opting not to then the deal better be worth it

Teams have until 3pm tomorrow to make trades prior to the finalization of team protection lists.

I don't blame Phaneuf for not waiving, and I don't want to lose him either.

I'd leave Methot exposed. I do like him, but hard decisions need to be made.

Tobias Enstrom agrees to waive no move for purposes of expansion.

The narrative will be that he did Winnipeg a huge favour, when it ought to be, old man gets to live in Vegas instead of Winnipeg

I think Dion stays in Ottawa.

The Sens aren't going to find a team to take that contract off their hands. Not without retaining salary or eating a bad contract(s).

And Melnyk won't agree to that.

Yea, I don't see Phaneuf being gone - and for the remaining short term, I'm fine with it. He's been fantastic for us.

In a few years I expect to feel different.

Not surprised we didn't make a move yet. Despite the media trying to drum up clicks and views. We are positioned well heading into expansion and don't really need to do anyone any favors. It seems as though management may be higher on Carrick than i thought. We lose nothing going into the expansion draft. The Ducks, Wild and Islanders all stand to lose a defender at this point.

Now we can make a deal with Vegas for a defender.

Yeah, that seems like the likeliest outcome now.

One thing that was really undersold in retrospect is the fact that you still stand to lose a player to Vegas even if you do trade a player ahead of the draft to avoid losing him for nothing. Minnesota's a prime example. They have to expose two of Dumba, Brodin or Scandella.

So why trade one of them, and then they're down two defensemen instead of just one?

Sad if that happens. He's been a steady presence for us. Very hard to replace.

I agree with you but if you leave emotion out of the equation, it's the only move that makes sense.

Karlsson - no brainer
Phaneuf - have no choice
Ceci - too young and too much upside to give up on

Maybe Methot's salary and age is enough of a deterrent.

If not, we lose a guy that we don't want to lose, but a guy that is ultimately replaceable, and near the end of the line career wise.

Methot is a guy who you can easily replace. Heck, if you want Emelin, he's not really any worse, and he can be yours for free. It's a pretty obvious call.

Well, say you trade one for a first, and then give Vegas a 2nd to not take one of the other ones, then you're essentially trading your next keeper and a 2nd for a 1st, and at least then you also likely get to choose which guy you lose.

It's tough to manage in a lot of cases, though. I mean, take the Habs on D. I'm guessing we decide to protect Benn as our 3rd guy, which means we either lose Beaulieu for nothing, or we trade him for a 3rd and then lose Davidson for nothing. So we lose him either way, and have now essentially traded Davidson for a 3rd. So not a great return for Beaulieu himself, but if we put him behind a guy like Benn on our depth charts anyways, than at least we get something for him.

I'm not surprised we haven't made a big trade (or any trade), I am surprised so many teams haven't yet ... then I realized teams have until 3pm tomorrow instead of midnight tonight to finalize their submission.

Pffttt ... guess we'll see more trades tomorrow.
