The Expansion Draft

They're saying Vatanen and Manson were both left unprotected by the Ducks but the belief is that they have a deal with Vegas.

And Preds left James Neal unprotected... but same thing, they're thinking a deal will be made.
Must be a hell of a deal the Ducks are offering to get Vegas to lay off those guys.

Wondering if they're offering up an expansion-exempt, younger defenseman like Theodore or Montour.

#Leafs protected list: Bozak, Kadri, van Riemsdyk, Brown, Komarov, Leivo, Martin, Rielly, Gardiner, Carrick, Andersen

So, they did indeed protect Martin, and it looks like Leivo's the guy they picked over Rychel & Leipsic.

Not bad. It would have been perfect if they'd exposed Martin and protected Leipsic too, but I guess I'll take it.

Gotta feel a bit for leivo. Seemed like a good opp for him to get a shot.

Don't get Brodin over dumba. Why risk it?

As for the isles I'd bet the deal is to take one of those 3.

I've gotta say, every time I play around with lineups for next year I have a hard time fitting in those guys anyway... even with people traded.

It's seems like basically a given they take leipsic unless somebody in the lv org loves marincins adv numbers.

Why didn't they have to protect the young guns?

In order to be eligible for the expansion draft, you had to have two years of professional (read: NHL or AHL) experience in North America prior to this season. Connor Brown, by virtue of having played two years in the AHL before to this season, met this criteria.

But Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Kapanen, Zaitsev, Soshnikov, Hyman---all of those guys are in their first or second North American pro seasons this year.

Right, forgot that rule. I thought Nylander played with the Marlies.
He did. Both in 2014/15, and 2015/16, actually.

But he split the 2014/15 season almost perfectly in half between the Swedish league and the AHL, so he must have avoided having that slightly less than half a season in the AHL count as a year of North American professional experience by the slimmest of margins, luckily for us.

Just have to offer Vegas more for Dumba than Minnesota is offering to not take him. Can't imagine that would be hard.

I can't believe the 7th overall pick of a few years ago who had 34 points at age 22 is left unprotected if there's no deal in place.
