The Expansion Draft

Dumba is basically the #1 overall pick in the expansion draft, if they had to rank players.

Vegas has to take him. And that sucks for Minny. Imagine losing Rielly for nothing.

Yeah I just realized that too. A 2018 1st may be more appealing though. They're going to have a bunch this year and next year is a better draft class.

But I still think just taking Dumba is the right move.

Depends on the return. They could potentially get a 2018 1st from Minny and then flip Staal for a 2017 1st. Maybe land another B level prospect and or a 2nd in the process.

I'm not saying that will happen, but it's certainly worth exploring.
 
Is it possible the Wild have a handshake deal in place to not take Dumba hence his exposure?

It's possible. But all the reports I've seen out of Minnesota seem to indicate the Wild weren't able to make a deal.

Apparently their GM also explained to Staal that he's unlikely to be taken, since Vegas will most likely take a defenseman instead.
 
My scenario would be Vegas agrees to leave the D alone and in return they get greenway and a 2018 3rd.

Select staal and flip to a contender with 1.5 retained each of the next 2 years for a 1st and a prospect.

1st, A prospect, 2 picks

They still have to ice a team though and they're likely going to have 5 firsts this year regardless, IMO. Think you'd rather have a player a little further along in his development so it's staggered, no?

I've been saying I'd take Dumba... but there's certainly angles that need to be explored.

It's insane to think the Wild knew all this time they would essentially lose Dumba for nothing and didn't make an attempt to deal him for something. Even the 3rd Buffalo gave to the Habs would have been better than walking away.

Either Fletcher is a poor asset manager or there is more to it than what we're getting

Mindy's 1st will likely be a late pick.

And who's giving up a high 1st in any draft for two years of Staal? So it'd be another late one, in a weaker draft.

That package doesn't stack up to Dumba.

Was going to post something similar. Dumba could have gotten back a pretty decent return. Kinda surprised they didn't deal him rather than leave him unprotected.
 
Yeah the definitely should just take dumba. But if their plan is to trade everyone valuable and acquire as many assets as possible I'd oblige.

No, I think it's understandable.

Minnesota had too many forwards to protect to go the four-and-four route. And they have five quality defensemen they'd prefer to keep. So, if you trade Matt Dumba---well, that's great, you've recouped an asset for him.

But then you've still got to lose a player to Vegas. And it's either going to be Marco Scandella (so now your team is down two quality defensemen instead of one), or it'll be Eric Staal (and now your team is down a defenseman and is much weaker at center).

If a trade couldn't be worked out with Vegas, just biting the bullet was their best course of action, IMO. The only thing I think you can really argue about is whether they should have exposed Brodin instead of Dumba.
 
Fair points.

I just have a hard time believing they have to walk away from Dumba for nothing. I'd be choked and I'm not a huge Dumba fan
 
The Leafs got very lucky. They're set up for this better than almost any team. No real tough decisions or need to give Vegas anything.
