The Fantastically Beautiful Joyously Superfun 22-23 Season Celebration Thread

I think it's possible to be both optimistic and frustrated with some of the decisions they've made. These aren't mutually exclusive, folks.

Beating Tampa doesn't exactly prove that they made perfect decisions at the deadline. It's okay to voice that displeasure while still acknowledging the caliber of the roster. You can do both, I promise.

do you not find it frustrating how the team is dicking Lilly specifically, and our prospects generally, around?

this is independent of any success/failure.
Of course?

This franchise has done lots of things in the last two plus decades I haven’t liked though, this is still my fun distraction from life. If we finally win a round, I’ll let myself enjoy it.

Well....... I wouldn't go that far, not that there's anything wrong with that.

This better suits that description in my mind.

I did mean Willy when I said the original, to be clear. 😉

it's not like I can just flip a switch to "enjoy" mode. part of being a sports fan is being somewhat irrational at times.

and right now, I cannot 'enjoy' watching this product, especially when we seem to be knowingly and deliberately shooting ourselves in the foot as a coach/management group. especially when I have to watch that fucking oaf Schenn play instead of one of our best all-around d-men. especially when I have to watch that dolt Lafferty run around like a moron while Holmberg, McMann, Steeves, and Anderson were denied opportunities. I am unable to separate that from the on-ice results at present. that may (and likely will, if I'm being honest) change if they go on a bit of a run.

the other part is the years of scars these fuckers have inflicted on us. easier to set expectations lower, you're less likely to be disappointed. and these fucks have disappointed me more than enough for the next decade or so.

I realized that after taking a closer look at your name/avatar.

blkngld = black and gold? Bruins?(spit)
Hell to the No. Steelers fan. The first forum I used with most of these posters, I started on the NFL boards and didn’t make a new handle just for hockey. Didn’t feel like changing it.

Yeah, I mean, if they somehow go deep and/or win a Cup, well, the results speak for themselves and we were wrong to question these moves.

But on the face of it, they got rid of good players for no reason, went with bad players of other teams instead, are benching one of our best most promising dmen for the third time in three years when we need him, and failed to address the most glaring need of adding a scoring winger.

Hard to be pleased with the outcome, especially when it looked like they'd set themselves up perfectly two days before the deadline, and then blew a fuse. But just win and all will be forgiven. Lose, and honestly I don't know what will come of it, but it won't be good.

Yeah, I mean, you don’t have to enjoy anything if you don’t want to. It’d suck to (miracle of miracles) make a long run and be so caught up on the 6th defenseman you haven’t let yourself enjoy most of it. But as you say, sports is irrational.

enjoyment cannot be forced through willpower though.

and yes, it does suck lol. I was super excited about this team up to and approaching the deadline, even though I didn't love the ROR move at first, I got on board, and tried to do the same with McCabe. but then the day of doom just fucking savaged my optimism and it hasn't returned. lineup decisions and eye test since aren't helping the cause either.

again, winning fixes everything though. I'm just not at all confident in the team or the process, which is a big 180 from earlier this year. but win enough and I'll probably shut up. win it all and I'll admit how wrong I was.

I hope we win with all of my heart

I do not expect us to win though and feel like I keep watching the same movie over and over as we fix shit at the deadline that isn't broken and play garbage players who allegedly play the right way.

If last June I had said that we were going to start game 1 of the next playoffs with zar and Lafferty firmly entrenched in the forward group and schenn as our #6, you all would have had me committed.

We're just old and completing the transformation from optimistic young Leafs fans to jaded old bastard Leafs fans like our dads before us.

The leafs broke my old man so badly that he became a Sabres fan. His explanation is that if he's going to watch an inept organization, he atleast wants one that he can afford to see play live whenever he wants and feels like they value him and his money.

especially when we had shown such promise earlier in the year.

Sandin and Lilly getting legit top-4 minutes.

no plugs on D, with the depth shining and guys like Timmins looking very legit. hell, we fucking resigned him only to relegate him to "Engvall salary displacer".

and we'd seen glimpses from guys like Anderson, McMann, and Holmberg. Keefer even said nice things about them all, then just declined to fucking play them for the likes of ZAR.

we had moved past the Malgins, the Petans, the Hunts.

and then boom, just like a swift kick to the dick, back to grittastic goonery and trucunacity. what we thought was our lovable nerd was really Burke with glasses.

it's the apparent about face on the style of play and team building strategy that hurts the most. especially after previous iterations of the same idea had ended so fucking badly.

if this Leafs team cannot at least make a finals, I may just be done.

part of that is Leafs related, part of that is how hard it is to justify supporting the NHL for any number of reasons.

EDIT: 'this Leafs team' means so long as we have Matthews, Marner, etc. i.e. this generation of star talent, which I expect to be by far the best in my lifetime to see play for the Buds
