The Fucking Offseason Thread - Why bother waiting?

He's had one insane year, out of nowhere, at age 24

Eh? 1.77 P/60 at 23 and then 2.41 P/60 at 24 is not "out of nowhere", that I'll absolutely grant that I don't expect 2.41 out of him ever again due to unsustainable OISH (as you've mentioned).

1.77 would have been 45th among LW in 19-20 (Hyman was 40th, Johnny Hockey was 46th, Bertuzzi 43rd)

Now...in fairness, he did play mostly centre and was 81st among centres in 5v5 production if you slot him there instead (natty isn't great for separating C for W tbh)

78) Tavares
79) Larkin
80) Couture
81) McCann

I guess now is a good time to remind everyone that Hyman might be the worst playoff choke of the lot....3 goals, 5 points in his last 19 playoff games.

Auston rightfully is eating a pile of shit over his playoff performances, but over the same period he has 8 goals and 17 points in 19 games. A 35 goal, 73 point pace.

Hyman has been largely immune from criticism despite this.

Front load the contract and LTIR him the last 2/3 season or trade him to a welfare team when he is making 4.25 but is getting paid 1.1

I am willing to cut Hyman a bit of slack for those playoff numbers.

Some of them are during the years prior to the surgery that replaced the feet he used to have for hands.

And then this year, he got knocked out long-term late in the season. And to compound that, the nerd prioritized getting Fred into one game ahead of using that cap space to give Hyman about a week and a half of game action to shake the rust off at the end of the season. Then they tossed him into the playoffs cold with predictable results.

Oil change to the rescue?

Remember when Oil Change tried to rescue us from Clarkson but the draw of being a Leaf was too much for him to turn down, even if it meant taking less money (on a 7 yr deal....)

Unless this is dirt cheap (4 millie) and a proper Pridham Special, this scares me.

Even then though...here's the rule: the salary variance in any adjacent years cannot exceed 35% of the salary in the first contract year regardless of whether the salary is increasing or decreasing & the lowest salary year cannot be less than 50% of the highest salary year

So what does that mean functionally? That we could make start him at 5, hold that for a few years and scale it down to 2.5 for the last few years? Even that's pretty fucking risky, having 2.5 million in cap space attached to 35-36 yr old Zach Hyman.

I mean on any 7 or 8 year deal we are likely losing value on the back end of the deal. We may gain value on the front end. Not sure I can get behind anything higher than an AAV of $4m on a 8 year contract. Odds are Hyman breaks down well before the deal ends.

Oil change going 7x6.5 may even hit 7x7

Larsson walking for nothing was a big hit to the ego of fans and media this morning so the organization who struggles to bring in top FAs will overpay here just to show everyone they are a go to destination

He's already missed significant time two seasons in a row and just turned 29.

I fucking hope so. I have grown to like and appreciate Zach but with another flop playoff performance and my preference that we get faster and younger, I really hope we don't get involved in anything reasonably likely to bring him back.
