The Fucking Offseason Thread - Why bother waiting?

You seem to be having it both ways.

The Nerd was good enough at the nerdies to put together the 2nd best nerdies team in the league this year.

I'm not sure what your point is...the Nerd is beyond reproach because he built a team with good nerdies? We can't look at individual moves and criticize because we won the silver at the xGFlympics?

I want to win a cup and I personally see roster deficiencies that stand in the way of it.

Nerdies are good but not everything.

They're legitimately most of the thing. But hockey is so fucking random in the small sample (single game, single series, etc) that how you arrive at your nerdies is probably as important as your nerdies.

I'm legitimately concerned about our ability to generate shots/chances independent of our big 4. I was similarly concerned prior to the deadline and even more concerned after I saw what we obviously prioritized at the deadline (grit & shot suppression)

I believe that having 3 full lines that can generate chances is extremely important to being able to insulate our big 4 from absolutely needing to produce/be healthy for us to win.

It’s controversial because:

A) Some people believe that we’d be better served protecting McCann than Holl. (I don’t personally subscribe to this view, but I can see the argument).

B) Some of us believe Kerfoot needs to go, so both deciding that we should keep him if possible and trading assets to try and protect him from the expansion draft is compound stupidity.

Feel free to disagree if you like, but this isn’t the no-brainer move you’re portraying it to be.
I'll take Door B, Monty.

Kerfoot needs to go as a center option. But he is fine on the wing. There is nowhere that tracks wing vs. center stats, but when he's played on the wing its been on the JT-Willy line.

Last 2 years:
w/Tavares:
389 mins, 0.18 rel CF%, 0.99 rel xGF%
w/o Tavares: 1103 mins, -4.02 rel CF%, -3.63 relxGF%

And his stats in Colorado were good:

But the center experiment has been a bust. He's just not an NHL center.

Its also weird that Dubas thought Foligno could play center when he acquired him, because that didn't work either. And somehow they think Nylander can't play center.

I just don't see the value he brings on the wing. His shot generation numbers are turrible. Paying 3.5 million for a midget defensive winger strikes me as a bad cap spend, even if he's good in that role.

That's Barclay Goodpro money

I think you guys are overlooking the apparent difficulty in finding good complementary forwards.

We signed like 5 of these bargain basement guys last year and none of them were good enough. Thornton, Simmonds, Vesey, GForce (though he was good enough that I'd like to see him back), Boyd, and whoever else I'm forgetting.

Kerf is a lot better than these guys. Maybe the market this offseason yields more comparable players willing to play for less and provide roughly the same results, but I'm skeptical. We need guys who are capable, who can skate fast, who have some offensive ability, and can play both ends of the ice. Kerf is better than everyone is giving him credit for here, and we're going to be in tough to replace him and Hyman from the castoff pile - another reason why I'd be bummed to see McCann plucked.

You are severely overrating Kerfoot.

If the fucking nerd can't go out into free agency and pull some winger of the scrap heap who's at least as good as Kerfoot and who makes half as much money at most, then MLSE is wasting their money funding his analytics department.

I'm really not. I'm not saying he's a first liner or anything.

He's a very good third liner who can fit in on the second line if needed. That's valuable.

You guys are acting like he's a low tier third liner or fourth liner making mega bucks. His $3.5M is really not that much. Less than Goodrow as we just saw.

He's a mediocre third liner, and a flat-out bad second liner.

And even if he's every bit as good as you claim he is, this team can't afford to pay him $3.5M if he can't play center. Which he can't.

I'm willing to give him another go at 3C. If somehow Dermott gets taken:

XXXX Matthews Marner
McCann Tavares Nylander
Robertson Kerfoot Mikheyev
Brooks Engvall Spezza

or

XXXX Matthews Marner
Kerfoot Tavares Nylander
Robertson McCann Mikheyev
Brooks Engvall Spezza

I'm pretty happy with either, with the only mystery there being XXXX.

LGM spitting fire today. I’m here for it. After the last deadline I’ve lost A LOT of faith in Dubas. Doesn’t deserve a benefit of the doubt at this point. Keeping 4ndersen, no legit back up until our season was nearly tanked, a 1st for the rotting corpse of Foligno.

Lou may be old school but I sure as fuck believe he’d have this team further along than they are right now.

He's a very good defensive player. The numbers do show that. Even as a C.

The numbers don't like his offensive contributions, but even then you can clearly see he's a great transition player. It's not really a surprise that he'd look far better with elite skill players who can make chances off of his good transition game, even if he lacks the finishing skill/smarts to create those chances himself. And that's been the case anytime he's played with a Nylander or Tavares, even when he's centered Willy when Tavares or Matthews has been out.

Interestingly his PP numbers have always looked good but we never use him there.
