The Fucking Season Thread - Redemption Tour '22

I honestly think Engvall is the best fit on the JT line on the current roster. But hopefully this works. Kerf should be on the 4th line for Pierre tho.

OK so at least Keefe admits there's an issue.

Next step is to admit that Engvall should be higher up, but that might not happen until we trade for a forward so that the other guys don't get "demoted to the 4th line".

Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Forsberg - Tavares - Nylander
Kerfoot - Spezza - Kase
Mikheyev - Kampf - Engvall

To me this team isn't worth a huge deadline expenditure until it shows it can succeed at the tough time of year. Otherwise you're continuing to throw assets down a hole.

I would stand pat, honestly, unless you get a crazy deal you can't refuse. The cupboard is pretty bare. There is zippo help in the minors and not a single elite level prospect in the org. Whatever we have, we need to hold onto. this Amirov news did not help matters any either.

That performance against Montreal didn't look like a team that is on the verge, or a player or two away.

You can’t base a season on some shit performance in one game. They’re neck and neck with the best teams in the league. You treat it like any other year and spend reasonably to improve the shot.

If there is no minor league help or elite prospects than why not just trade them?

C is still weak and vulnerable in the case of injury. Imagine Tavares gets hurt again. It would be a disaster. Dubie has to pick up some capable UFA who can take over the 3C spot and even play in the top six if called upon.

This has definitely been my thinking for a lot of the time since their choke job against the Habs.

I guess the problem is, we’ve only got two more guaranteed years with Matthews & Nylander on the team, and guys like Tavares, Muzzin, Rielly & Brodie are not likely to improve with age.

So you’ve kind of got to go one way or the other. If you think the team is fatally flawed and can’t win, then you blow it up. Or you keep trying to do everything you can to win during this window.

But just sitting idly by and letting more time tick off these guys’ clocks without doing anything seems like the worst of all available options.

There’s no blowing up a roster like this. We all know that it would be insanity. So the only actual option is to go for it.

I always prefer getting extra years out of dudes as opposed to rentals because it extends the window and if you're trading young assets you want to get multiple kicks out of the can with the dudes you acquire... But there is something about this opportunity that feels quite unique. They could theoretically get a first line forward, top pairing D and starting goalie to add to this already great team.

But I think I hesitate to go balls deep UNLESS I address the goaltending. And I also hesitate to go balls deep unless I grab an elite D and elite forward. So fuck it, I want all 3.

I think if you can remove Mrazek and get someone as good for cheaper, you do it. But I don’t think we’re gonna see real assets spent on a goalie change. Unless it’s part of the same deal where we’re using prospect capital to acquire a skater. Say in the Forsberg deal we send them Mrazek for their backup or something.

I honestly wouldn’t worry about goaltending. They can either go white hot or bust, regardless of who we have. Spend on the F and D so that the puck spends more time in the other end and the goalie becomes less of a factor.

If I'm spending every trade chip I have I think I want a team with 0 question marks. If they grab a top pairing D and a forward, they might as well get the goalie too. Don't half ass it, I say.

Just no more Rittiches please.

If they can’t land a goalie who’s actually playing well this year, they may as well not bother.

And btw, while the NHL doesn't care when other teams do this, they WILL do everything they can to close the loophole if the Leafs go nuts at the deadline.

Only if they win. If they get bounced early after going nuts at the deadline, no one will care about closing these loopholes.

But if they go nuts and win, suddenly it’ll become urgent to make teams cap compliant in the playoffs too, and to ban double salary retention.
