The Fucking Season Thread - Redemption Tour '22

Ellis, Couturier, Forsberg, Giordano, Fleury seems like a decent haul.

Tavares-Matthews-Marner
Forsberg-Couturier-Nylander
Bunting-Kampf-Mikheyev
Kerfoot-Engvall-Kase

Giordano-Brodie
Muzzin-Ellis
Sandin-Rielly

And btw, while the NHL doesn't care when other teams do this, they WILL do everything they can to close the loophole if the Leafs go nuts at the deadline.
What’s the loophole though? Isn’t the issue more whether the player is actually injured or not and being held out just to create cap room?

Being able to ice a roster that is potentially more than 20 million dollars over the salary cap during the time of year that matters most (playoffs). Seems a little weird, no?

But teams have to be able to replace injured players during the season, and then they cant just rule that they need to sit or shed them before the playoffs, so I don’t know how that gets dealt with.

I hope we exploit the shit out of it. And it should be fair game unless the injury that gives rise to the extra space is a fraud. That’s the only thing they could do, have an independent medical evaluation to confirm it, but then you’re messing with the private health and treatment issues of a player, which they can’t realistically or practically do.

They shouldn't even bother trying to close the loophole... open it up. Players acquired within 28 days of the deadline do not have the cap hit count for the remainder of the season.

Would really promote a fun deadline
It's so fucking fun and brings me back to the pre-cap days. I just hope Dubas has the balls to deplete their entire cupboard of prospects and picks to build an allstar team.

I don't see why the owners would have an issue either... cap is negotiated to be 50% of revenues and they have escrow. How many new contracts would be signed for a material dollar amount within the month before the deadline.

I don’t know who we’re getting but I bet trades happen within the next few days. He likes to act early and now he’s got space and lots of opportunities.

If there is no minor league help or elite prospects than why not just trade them?

because it probably won't help. and because, at the moment, we don't really have the assets to spare on these trades that deeper better run organizations might. we'll have to bleed ourselves dry to win a bid on a good player. Other teams don't necessarily have to do that.

Bottom line is our top guys need to figure shit out. They've been berated and abused, and then subsequently coddled, only to arrive at the same result again and again. we've added gritty leader dudes for the room. didn't work.

It's time for the Leafs brass to see some real return on their investment here. Which, I don't need to remind you, has been enormous. Gigantic. None of the several teams that are better than the Leafs have 3 8 figure players. There has to be some justification for Toronto to be doing this to their cap.

If I'm ownership, it's going to be real hard for Shanahan in particular to talk his way around a 6th 1st round loss. He's a hell of a talker, I grant you...he scored himself a huge extension without even a single playoff win...but there are limits to everything.

Instead of humiliating the outmatched habs last year and getting the monkey off their back, now they have to play a superior team in the 1st round with a monkey on their back that's been eating cheeseburgers and Hagen Daas all offseason.

Knies + a 2022 1st can you get a great rental
Robertson + a 2022 2nd can get you a great rental
Niemela + a 2023 1st can get you a great rental

They've got pieces to do whatever they want.

But if you think our team isn't good enough, and our minor leaguers are all shit - why not trade them to improve the roster?

Worst comes to worst we fail, and then you blow up the loser core and get elite young assets back for them and tank for more.

You don’t cut bait on a core of 24-25 year olds. You keep trying. We had no business being in the playoffs the first few years with a bunch of 19-21 year olds. Those should basically be viewed as practice rounds. The last two exits have been bad. But we keep improving the team, and so we should see the results improve too. Keep going.

don't worry, they'll trade them. I'm just talking about what I would do.

I think we're getting Chychrun
agreed... I think they have opened that relationship with the Lybushkin deal and a trade for a young player with the term he has is a lot easier to swallow when having to give up the draft picks needed. Niemela won't play for another 2-3 years anyway.. and you've got yourself a young, mobile and manageable 2-3 defenseman for that time. Worth it.

Now if you could pry Crouse and Phil thrown in... plus as mentioned trade Mrazek for their goalie prospect...

It would be a big, but good deal.

Niemela, a first, Dermot, Anderson Mrazek , and a 2nd for Chykrn, Crouse, Phil at 50% and either Wedgewood (brampton boy) or Karel Vejmelka

I also realise that Loui Erikson is on their roster.. is he basically Robidas Island? Could we take him off their hands to pay his salary and have him on our LTIR.?
