The Fucking Season Thread - Redemption Tour '22

I was thinking about this last night....

I had assumed that last season's goal scoring rate was once in a career Matthews magic that we were unlikely to see again. That he was probably a 50-55 goal guy (which is fucking obscene, perennial rocket richard winning levels already) and the ~65 goal pace was the tippy top of the mountain for him. But then this year happened and it's really starting to look like this is just his normal peak. Does he have something historically obscene in him? Most of the elite elite goal scorers in NHL history have a season where they were just silly. Hull's 86, Ovy's 65 in the dead puck era, Selanne's 76, etc, etc. Is 50/50 possible in the modern era? If it is, Matthews is the only guy capable of it.

Last year Matty did that despite the PP absolutely tanking for half the season.

everybody still doesn't understand how badly matty's numbers have been impacted by various PP shenanigans over his career.

this is the first time in his career he's been part of a full-time stacked PP getting close to real top-unit minutes and firing on all cylinders.

I made this prediction early in his career, and though Covid came along and bottled it for the past two years, I’m still going to stand by it:

By the time his career is done, Matthews will definitely crack the top-10 for all-time single-season goal totals (>71). And I’d give him an outside chance of cracking the top-5 (>76).

crazy we're creeping up to top 5 in literally every single category except for goaltending (and therefore goals against).

I am slightly concerned that Tampa and Florida are putting up the results they are despite goaltending that is quite comparable to ours... especially cause Vasilevskiy is easily the best goalie of any of 'em...

If the idea is that they want him to be a new veteran leaderbean for the Marlies, then fine.

But the dude isn’t an NHL player at this point.
