I was thinking about this last night....
I had assumed that last season's goal scoring rate was once in a career Matthews magic that we were unlikely to see again. That he was probably a 50-55 goal guy (which is fucking obscene, perennial rocket richard winning levels already) and the ~65 goal pace was the tippy top of the mountain for him. But then this year happened and it's really starting to look like this is just his normal peak. Does he have something historically obscene in him? Most of the elite elite goal scorers in NHL history have a season where they were just silly. Hull's 86, Ovy's 65 in the dead puck era, Selanne's 76, etc, etc. Is 50/50 possible in the modern era? If it is, Matthews is the only guy capable of it.
