The ****ing Pre-Season/Training Camp Thread (2019/20)

Tonight's roster:

EE6NuoZWsAAlSHz

Looks like last game's roster mostly.

My guess at lines:

Johnsson-Matthews-Nylander
Mikheyev-Kerfoot-Aberg
Agostino-Shore-Read
Conrad-Gaudet-Timashov
Clune

Rielly-Ceci
Marincin-Sandin
Kivihalme-Liljegren
Rubins-Holowell

Tho

The Marincin/Harpur swap is interesting. Wouldn't surprise me if Marincin/Sandin have the early lead based on the first two games.

Heh. So, in the practice lines for the guys that aren’t playing tonight, Spezza’s been moved over to Freddie Gauthier’s right wing.

Nic Petan has also been moved to the left side of a line with a couple of obvious non-contenders for roster spots in Adam Brooks and Yegor Korshkov:

Kapanen-Tavares-Marner
Moore-Gauthier-Spezza
Engvall-Elynuik-Bracco
Petan-Brooks-Korshkov

Muzzin-Barrie
Harpur-Schmaltz
Gravel-Holl
Duszak-Lindgren

Neuvirth
Kaskisuo
Woll

So that just about tells us the opening night roster IMO. The only two question marks are does Aberg stay.. Who gets the 5\6 job between Harpur, Schmaltz, Sandin, Marincin. I'm really disapointed Liljegren isn't getting a real shot.

Kapanen-Tavares-Marner
Johnsson-Matthews-Nylander
Mikheyev-Kerfoot-Aberg
Moore-Gauthier-Spezza

Muzzin-Barrie
Rielly-Ceci
Harpur-Schmaltz
Marincin-Sandin

I'm really hoping that Gauthier and Harpur are the rope that Dubas is giving Babcock to hang himself.

I'm with zekie here. still very very early. think he may actually be experimenting, un-Babsian as it may be.

And remember my marincin-sandin pairing was just a guess. It could easily be this tonight:

Kivihalma-Marincin
Sandin-Liljegren

damn i hope Kivi gets another chance. though i'm very happy to see Lilly's not the one that came out.

Sandin back on the left is better imo too. more realistic that he cracks the roster on that side.

wish that Shore was with Agostino. Shore's still a bit of an afterthought for babs it seems, even though imo he's probably the best choice for the 4C spot.

Mikheyev-Kerfoot-Aberg. If Aberg impresses tonight I can't imagine he doesn't start on that line this year. Not many other options really.

And I was calling for Spezza on Goat's RW. Not that it's what I would do since all of Spezza's offensive ability will be wasted playing with a literal black hole... But I think it's what will happen. Maybe Shoresy and/or Agostino as the extra forward. Think Petan is gonezo. No loss really. He kinda sucks.

it's almost as if Babs is opposed to having a fourth line with any offensive abilities. much safer to have realgud muckers

Yeah I don't think anything is close to being finalized, but we are seeing who they have in mind. Petan/Aberg competing for Kappy's temporary opening and the extra forward spot. Harpur, Marincin, Sandin, Schmaltz separating themselves from the other D.

Agostino/Shore/Kivinhalme/Gravel on the outside looking in. Plan for Bracco/Lilly is likely heading to the AHL to start.

I've never thought Spezza was one of our top-12 forwards, and definitely didn't think he should be trying to hack it at C anymore, so seeing him on the 4th line W is more than fine with me. I'm also no fan of Petan - not nearly skilled enough to make up for his lack of both size and speed (and a worrying Bracco comp, to boot). Aberg has been a legit 3rd line producer and passable possession player against borderline 2nd line competition. For me he's always been the favorite to crack the 3rd line......though that was before Mikheyev's impressive showing last game, which if it continues pushes Aberg down to the 4th line when Hyman is back.

My issue is with Babcock still thinking Goat is good. and I'm sure Dubas will have an issue with that, too.

Mikheyev-Kerfoot-Kapanen
Moore-Shore-Aberg/Agostino

is what I hope to see eventually as the bottom 6 (as long as Mikheyev is what he looked like in his first game).

Man they have so many guys that can move up and down the lineup eh. Moore, Aberg, Agostino, Mikheyev... Nice to have that kind of depth. Felt that was lacking last year.

And yeah.. Not really sure Bracco will be a thing long-term. He ain't young anymore and man he's just so... Limited. 4th line RW, PP specialist is what I'd imagine his ceiling is.

looking a bit closer maybe the comp isn't fair to Bracco - his 21yr old AHL year was better than anything petan did, and he seems to have made a massive improvement in professionalism and commitment, which is probably still an issue for Petan.
