The ****ing Season thread, 2015/16 Edition

I'm not sure if I see your point here...well, I see it, it's just a really bad one. This was a move to free up contract slots in the organization, by clearing out young players that weren't considered future NHL assets by our new scouting staff. With the benefit of hindsight (and frankly, foresight as well, most of us expected nothing from this group of players going forward when we heard about the trade), our scouting staff appears to be right:

Beck is an almost 25 yr old AHL 2nd liner. He might turn into a fringe 3rd liner in the NHL. Verhaege spent a good chunk of the year in the ECHL because he wasn't ready for the AHL at 20, which isn't a good sign. Finn at 21 also wasn't ready for full time AHL duty and spent a solid chunk of his season in the ECHL, Nilsson went back to Sweden. Gibson finished his AHL season with a .909 sv%

So yeah, we traded a bunch of career minor or euro leaguers for an expiring contract...I fail to see how that rebuts my point.
these trades are not even comparable. We didn't trade a bunch of picks and prospects for an aging vet. It was a trade for Grabner, who obviously was not supposed to stay with the past for over 1 season, so it was more like a bunch of prospects for future picks.

And the reason is clear. The Leafs were getting close to the max # of contracts the team could hold, and we were gonna have a LOT of draft picks in the 16 draft, so we had to rid some prospects who just simply don't look like they're gonna make it. And the past season did show the analysis was right - those prospects are not gonna amount to much ... if anything at all.

The issue isn't keeping every single prospect. Its being patient with the ones like Steen and Stralman who separate themselves from the pack at a young age.

Prospects will be weeded out at every stage. Some won't earn entry level contracts. Some will earn ELC but not make it to the AHL. Some will earn ELC's and AHL spots but not a second contract. But the prospects who are performing well in the NHL at 20... you shouldn't trade those ones for nothing.

If the Steen trade was for Pronger instead of Stemp I don't think many people would be complaining. Just poor valuation by a senile old man on his way to the back seat.

Stralman needed NHL development, TO's coaches Wilson and RC aren't/weren't development coaches so I doubt he would have turned into the fine player he is now. Had Babs been here with Stralman he probably would have become a better d-man for TO.

Fletcher has made mistakes but trading Steen for Stempniak only proved to be a mistake in hindsight, at the time of the trade Stempniak was a proven scorer and Steen looked like a good 3rd line option.

Personally I thought the Colbourne trade/dump was one of TO's worst, it's taken him awhile but he's now showing he's a viable NHL player.

Jesus titty****ing Christ.

Yup.

That was a ****ing horrific trade which at the time had me up in arms. I loved Steen.

Stempni****ingyak.

That piece of shit haunted us again this year when it seemed Boston traded two picks for him instead of seemingly injured PA.

The PA thing still burns me.

The thing about the Steen trade that bothered me was the timing. They had the deal almost done with Burke. He took over later in the week. Fletcher should not have been allowed to do that trade.

We're really dominating possession right now. Need another goal to loosen things up. Albany is a curmudgeonly old bunch with a knack for sticking around, but once they start having to get more aggressive they'll open up space for our skill guys.

Great first period. Tons of puck possession by the Marlies, and the Devils actually setting up any sustained pressure in the Marlies zone was pretty rare.

And though Connor Brown and Zach Hyman in particular were beasts out there, the Nylander/Kapanen line was a lot more noticeable at even strength than they've been for most of the series.

Would've been nice to add another goal or two, but hopefully they can do that in the second. Keeping the Devils in the hole is pretty key---once they've got the lead, they're pretty good at sitting back with it Devils-style.

Sure hope Willy is suffering from mono, 'cause if he's healthy, this is a worrisome performance for this series. Better not be how he responds to close checking, physical hockey.
