these trades are not even comparable. We didn't trade a bunch of picks and prospects for an aging vet. It was a trade for Grabner, who obviously was not supposed to stay with the past for over 1 season, so it was more like a bunch of prospects for future picks.I'm not sure if I see your point here...well, I see it, it's just a really bad one. This was a move to free up contract slots in the organization, by clearing out young players that weren't considered future NHL assets by our new scouting staff. With the benefit of hindsight (and frankly, foresight as well, most of us expected nothing from this group of players going forward when we heard about the trade), our scouting staff appears to be right:
Beck is an almost 25 yr old AHL 2nd liner. He might turn into a fringe 3rd liner in the NHL. Verhaege spent a good chunk of the year in the ECHL because he wasn't ready for the AHL at 20, which isn't a good sign. Finn at 21 also wasn't ready for full time AHL duty and spent a solid chunk of his season in the ECHL, Nilsson went back to Sweden. Gibson finished his AHL season with a .909 sv%
So yeah, we traded a bunch of career minor or euro leaguers for an expiring contract...I fail to see how that rebuts my point.
And the reason is clear. The Leafs were getting close to the max # of contracts the team could hold, and we were gonna have a LOT of draft picks in the 16 draft, so we had to rid some prospects who just simply don't look like they're gonna make it. And the past season did show the analysis was right - those prospects are not gonna amount to much ... if anything at all.
