The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

makes a lot of sense with some of the moves that made zero sense from Dubs perspective. this makes me even more concerned with the direction they will go in the new gm

This was my working hypothesis all along...I was rebuffed when I compared it to AA/Shatkins.

AA could have stayed with the Jays. But he wanted more power.

Or talked to his wife back in March when asked by shanny and Dubas apparently went away for a week to speak to his family…it’s not like this came out of no where. He has months to speak to his family before this one presser. It didn’t make sense why he let it play out this way. I have to assume it’s something none of us could imagine for him to not already have all needed conversations

"talking with my wife about it' was a negotiation ploy....hard to believe they had dinner all year and avoided the topic until Wednesday

He likely wanted to increase the amount of talent up front but Shanahan maybe felt grit and gudpros make more sense. And dubas obliged. So Shanahan was content with keeping a guy that he can "control."

Boosh was the first tell for me....you hardcore Leaf fans probably can mention an earlier one

Watching that dubas analytics conference thingy on YouTube again shook me. Made me more receptive to the shanny interface theory. Too many moves of his completely contradict everything he said and believed in.

The only thing is... Keefe pretty clearly loved his Booshes too.

If he was getting pressure to add gudpros, I have a hard time thinking it wasn't from both directions.
Yeah that throws a wrench into a lot of it. In that conference dubas called Keefe a forward thinking progressive coach and cited the analytics improvement with him in charge. He had full buy in to Kyle's vision. What changed? Kyle's vision? Or was there interference?

Whatever we heard yesterday, isn't the complete picture. Far from it.
This was the PR piece.

Unless Spezza gets drunk at a pool party, the truth will be busy for a while.....

I disagree with this part. Easy optics would be to move on swiftly after being eliminated. I honestly don't think most of the hockey world would've batted an eye really. That's just how the league works when you repeatedly don't get results.

Optics + there's lots of work a GM does in running the org that don't involve the sexy part of making trades.

Shanny obviously trusted Dubas to run the draft, and set up all the innovative processes involving scouting, performance tech, player development, etc....but couldn't resist telling the nerd "we need this guy for the playoffs"

this is interesting; didn't know this happened

And it’s expected Shanahan will seek guidance from NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and the league office before making the hire, as many teams in this situation do.

Seems pretty convenient to chalk up every trade you don’t like to shanahan’s influence, when shanahan hired, cultured and promoted dubas specifically because of his analytics / outside the box approach.

I mean, shanahan let dubas go to the media on Monday despite thinking it was a bad idea. Doesn’t sound like a guy pulling the strings there.

Until you know who won the disagreements over roster changes its academic.

I'm open to the theory. Not married to it. Because at a certain point Kyle changed. A lot. Could be him overthinking his own vision, but maybe it isn't.

Let?

He's the GM of a marquee franchise. The buzz would have been worse had Shanny blocked his availability.

No buzz about the president not being there. And if he hasn’t spoken we know know that by the end of the week ther would have have been a presser to announce the extension.
