The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

….he was power hungry enough to block some moves, and insist on others.

says unnamed sources.

shanahan has a long resume and sterling reputation, much of which is very public. we know the kind of people he has continually hired, and the only one that could possibly be considered a patsy is young Kyle Dubas, yet he literally gave Dubas free reign to build the entire organization from ground up with his own people in every position.

Shanahan suddenly turning out to be a lying, lazy, meddling coward of an exec seems fairly unlikely.

Well, seems I’ve come back to some interesting goings on in Leaf land after being on a canoe trip in Algonquin with no cell/internet access since the crack of dawn on Friday morning.

Anyone want to give me the Coles notes version on what’s gone down since then?
You’re the Leafs GM now

1. watch dubas presser
2. watch shanny presser (an all timer)
3. read mirtle's article
4. Greg Moore fired

ME and Presto are arguing about cocks again.

It’s obviously not hard to picture Shanahan injecting his opinion after years and years of first round exits….so much so, it’s what I had been predicting the last few days as you all told me I was nuts, and then low and behold reporting comes out supporting it nearly verbatim.

..but now we don’t trust Mirtle and his sources. It’s made up. Conveniently.

actually, maybe Mirtle is full of shit and he just wrote his article based on everything I was saying here the last two days.

fuck.

and for the record, one of these stories requires one of these two men, whom we pretty much all respect and appreciate, to be utterly incompetent and dishonest, while the other story just requires one of them to have buckled under the pressure of this market (something which seemed pretty apparent just watching and listening to him).

We pretty much all respect and appreciate,

agreed.….but I do think taking Shanny’s presser as gospel, will be proven to be a mistake.

this is just something I’ll never agree on….I think this idea he cracked up or anything in the presser is massively overblown. He showed some emotion after recounting how his wife informed him of the toll this past season had taken on the family…..and that he’d want to talk to them before making any decisions on the future.

I don’t see that as buckling, or a reason for Shanny to lose all faith in him…..to me that’s a modern man showing his family some respect with his choice of words, and publicly saying they’ll have a voice in the decision.

narrator: they won’t.

and as we reminded you when you "predicted" that, there was nothing different about the moves Dubas made this year than he did in any other year.

a refresher, Dubas adds:

Year 1: J.Tavares, J.Muzzin P.Lindholm, T.Ennis, F.Gauthier, T.Moore, N.Petan, I.Ozhiganov, M.Marincin, J.Holl, M.Hutchinson

Year 2: I.Mikhehev, A.Kerfoot, J.Spezza, P.Engvall, K.Clifford, N.Shore, D.Timashov, N.Robertson, C.Ceci, T.Barrie, K.Gravel, R.Sandin, J.Campbell, K.Kaskisuo

Year 3: T.Brodie, N.Foligno, J.Thornton, W.Simmonds, Z.Bogosian, A.Barabanov, A.Galchenyuk, R.Nash, T.Boyd, J.Vesey, A.Brooks, M.Lehtonen, T.Liljegren, D.Rittich

Year 4: D.Kampf, M.Giordano, N.Ritchie, O.Kase, M.Amadio, N.Abruzzese, I.Lyubushkin, K.Dahlstrom, P.Mrazek, E.Kallgren

Year 5: R.O'Reilly, C.Jarnkrok, N.Acciari, S.Lafferty, ZAR, NAK, P.Holmberg, D.Malgin, J.McCabe, L.Schenn, C.Timmins, J.Benn, M.Murray, S.Samsonov, J.Woll

Personally, I still think publicly wondering whether you want to continue in a role and then coming back with a far bigger salary demands (and until disputed, that's what I'm going with) with very limited playoff success is just a huge risk to take and I have to think Kyle's smart enough to realize that's what it was.

there were other incidents, and we can debate whether his roster moves also reflected him buckling, but the two incidents which really stand out because you really just never see a GM doing it are:

1. yelling at fans during a game
2. Having a press conference - against your boss' advice - for literally the sole purpose of saying you're not sure you feel up to the job

The other piece to this is that until the moment he publicly wondered, shanahan thought he was coming back.

what is he supposed to do with that? Sure Kyle, take your time…

You mean intentional? Yes, it was.

Quit and you're hated in your hometown so just get fired.

Lol...

I bet the whole thing was just a dog and pony show geared up to give everyone what they wanted while seeming to be what it looked like.

Damn.... that was a good bowl.

I'm kinda comfortably numb right now.

Carry on, very engrossing and entertaining stuff.

If it's really true Shanny wants to be puppetmaster or is concerned about veto power, a bit weird there'd be so much stress on picking someone with a lot of experience next. Like shouldn't we be expecting a Tulsky type?

They don't like it when I do.

you'd wonder why tulsky would even move from being an assistant gm in a great front office to a for all intents and purposes being an assistant gm to a meddler like shanahan who'll destroy your reptation if you cross him.

maybe money, i guess.
