The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

Just making sure I got Shanny's timeline of events right:

- Kyle's agent lays out framework of financial compensation
- Shanny gets approved by board, presents Dubas contract
- Dubas says k cool gotta run it by my fam
- Shanny says maybe don't give a presser yet until you've decided
- Shanny says he's caught off guard by the extent of Dubas' uncertainty, wonders if he needs a backup plan
- reaches out to Dubas again
- Dubas emails new financial terms that were, according to Shanny, much different
- Shanny decides to go in another direction

That's basically the story, right?

iirc Dubas didn't email the financial terms.

After a few days he emailed Shanny to say he did want the job after all. (a face to face conversation would probably have been the way to reassure shanny - an email is kind of a wtf way to say that i think, and probably made things even worse).

his agent presented the new terms to shanny.

i think that's the story.

hey, I’m freebasing hopium that he’ll still hire Tulsky too….🤞🏼

Hired Dubas, didn't he?

I'm just not willing to accept that the moves I liked were Dubas moves and the moves I didn't were forced on him by Shanahan. Too convenient, too "choose your own adventure-y"

I'm sure it's true Leafs management argued vociferously on how to "fix" this team. I'm sure they were at their wits end trying to figure out why a great regular season team couldn't get over the hump.

I'm still not entirely sure if any of it was to an abnormal level that doesn't happen in other organizations otherwise, why did either party even pretend they wanted to continue this partnership?

Imaginary argument…..I’ve said we have no clue what Shanny did push, and what he blocked.

you’re choosing your own adventure to ignore the reporting that says Shanny pushed/blocked moves.

Too convenient, too "choose your own adventure-y"

exactly.

we just know they began to but heads in a way they hadn’t in the early years.

Nah, I'm saying it's all silly bullshit. We don't know what moves were pushed or blocked, if the sources have a functioning clue, etc.

That a member of the Toronto TMZ writes it, doesn't make it accurate. Historically, it's more liket to be the opposite actually.

Dubas has made a lot of stupid moves over the last 5 years, it's way too easy to hand wave those away as Shanny's influence when this is the first we've heard of interfence beyond normal collaborative organizational dynamics.

yeah i'm gonna need a lot more than some strangely worded paraphrasing of unnamed sources by Mirtle to not choose the Occam's Razor story here over the one that frankly paints the top two execs of one of the best teams in the league both as weak and incompetent.

if it's true that as mirtle's saying, shanny actively prevented him from making deals that they believed would help them win, then dubas shouldn't have returned at any price. like where did the first financial package come from? why express interest in that initially?

Like I say, youre choosing to disregard the reporting that he blocked deals and pushed others…

Yes, I am. Because there's no specifics provided at all, the whole fucking thing is weird and the first time we've heard this in 5 years coincided with the firing of the GM.

We're just supposed to take it on it's face, again, despite the hilariously shit way it was presented (that you've even admitted has issues).

As I said initially when I disregarded it, the problem with the entire piece is that it now leaves it up to us to theory craft which moves were forced/blocked and those are inevitably going to align with our preconceived notions of who Dubas was as a GM. Pure choose your own adventurism.

and frankly, Dubas made a lot of bad moves over the last 5 years, you're just not going to convince me that those were all Shanny and the smart shit was Dubas.

he didn’t want back….isnt that what he said in the press conference?….and then he double or tripled his asking price with an 11th hour proposal, so he wouldn’t have to come back.

his agent gave shanahan initial terms which he took to the board and gave him a contract which he said he'd talk to his family about, why even bother?

why even bother remaining GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs, for $20-30m?

i mean, yes absolutely. if you feel the President's meddling is preventing you from icing a team that can win in the playoffs, which is what mirtle's article says, why would you want to stay period?
