The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

Funny how you translated that into a $2 million annual gap
I'm just going with the rumor reported.

Regardless the actual amount, do you think it's more likely or less likely that it was a substantial increase?

In other words, does Shanny care if he came back and said I want $200k more per year? Something major was countered, which is what closed the loop on the whole process that left Shanny so disenchanted.

I’m with zeke. It’s besides the point. If you had been in negotiations and thought you had an understanding for a deal and the other side out of nowhere makes a public statement questioning their intent to go through with said deal and then makes new demands, that’s enough.

Pretty sure Shanny started having second thoughts after the presser and then the meeting. This was just icing on the cake by then.

It is beside the point - if the point was what tipped the scales for Shanny.

The point of this discussion is whether the family thing was mostly bullshit and a device he used to try to squeeze Shanny out of more cash and/or autonomy, and I say it was bullshit because a large ask followed days after Kyle "think of the children!" Dubas put on his act in front of the media. Because extra money for an already rich guy about to sign a mega deal doesn't make the family booboo any better.

I’ve personally both accepted and rejected jobs because it was the best thing for my family, and have always been pretty open about it. I guess someone could have read into my explanations that my wife had threatened to leave me and take the kids if I made a different choice, but they’d be a) wrong, and b) probably projecting.

In which Elliott walks back most everything he insinuated about the "game if thrones" going on...

couple of interesting tidbits at the bottom:

16. Toronto took Matthew Knies with the 57th pick of the 2021 NHL draft. If Toronto didn’t select him, he was going to Pittsburgh at 58.

17. The NHL and NHLPA meet Wednesday in New York City. Main thing to keep an eye on: cap conversations. Everyone’s expecting it to go up $1M, but people who are smarter at math than I am believe there is a way to get it up closer to $1.5M or $2M without asking the players to budge on their escrow caps. That’s a non-starter. Any flexibility is good news.

I assume you meant this one?

I still can't believe a 37-year-old Ontarian threw away the job of a lifetime.

In another podcast Doug MacLean mentioned Kyle asked to have lunch with him once to get his advice on how to deal with a disgruntled ownership group. Story is that at the time Kyle suspected he'd be fired by the Greyhounds.

Sometimes later he gets a miracle cold call from a hall of famer in Brandon Shanahan, and the rest is history.

29-year-old Kyle Dubas would absolutely be shocked at how he handled himself this week. He will never be fully satisfied with his jobs for the rest of his life.

I know Kyper and co are not popular around here, and for good reasons. I hadn't listened to any episode ever but this one episode is worth a listen.

I share Kyper's take on Kyle, and Gord's regrets on how he left the Leafs were interesting to hear.

"I just don't understand Kyle...". Neither do I. Job of a lifetime. He didn't deserve a minute of it with the way he threw it away.

I can't control my rage at this situation. Kyle was every young man/woman growing up in this city. He won the lottery of all jobs.

I don’t understand the value in being angry that a guy clearly tried his hardest and just couldn’t finish the job.

His heart wasn’t in it anymore and when his boss realized he was waffling he ended things.

This is a good outcome. Would you rather Dubas stay on? Or are you upset at him for showing humanity and buckling?

Would I as a fan rather he stayed? No way. I thought Kyle failed and should not have been brought back.

Am I upset at him showing humanity? No when you put it that way but that's not what he did. He comes out saying the job is hard on his family but extra few millions would heal that!!!

He emails the guy who cold called him and gave him an absolutely unbelievable opportunity, instead of picking up the phone and talking.

I am 100% sure he will regret what happened after a week of rest on a beach in Cancun.

He was a Toronto Maple Leafs executive before he was 30!!!! Had years left to make money. And he did what he did.

I am not mad at him as a fan, glad he is gone in fact. I am mad at him as a person in the same age group as him. I sooooo wanted to be Kyle as I'm sure millions of others wanted to as well. What he did makes me mad yes.
