The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

I still can't believe a 37-year-old Ontarian threw away the job of a lifetime
Is it though?

Its sort of like the saying from my youth, show me a hot chick and I'll find you 3 guys sick of her shit. Sure it seems like a dream job but after 9 years with the Leafs? Dream could actually be of the nightmare variety.

I am 100% sure he will regret what happened after a week of rest on a beach in Cancun.
I'm not

He will regret it after his kids are grown up and he’s divorced if this was a marital issue. Until then he’s doing what he feels he needs to, sometimes the mind forces you into something to relieve the stress on the body.

I see your point. This is not a normal job though. It's not a bank executive who could "shake up " the boardom and become an exec in the healthcare industry.

There has been fewer than 210 GM's in all of NHL history. What is he left to do? Move to Pittsburgh of all places and again be a GM? Take on a lessor role with significantly more normal salary?

Oh on this totally with you. Had he said "this is hard on my family and I can't do it anymore" I would totally respect that decision.

He said that and then asked for more money and emailed his boss.

Many execs downsize. It’s not that uncommon. He will get satisfaction from any gm position if he gets one.

Don’t disagree but he looked like a man trying to walk two diverging paths.

Yeah I guess this is the key point here. It's hard for me to see a young guy from here moving from GM of the Maple Leafs to any other role and be professionally satisfied. It could happen though I agree.

Also once you’ve taken stock of your life you sometimes come to the conclusion that you’ve accomplished enough. Now I don’t think he feels that without a cup but it does happen to people as they age.

He did. He looked broken. Maybe be needed to downsize but couldn't bring himself to do it. So subconsciously he orchestrated this whole mess so he doesn't end up regretting it.

I wish he had taken a week vacation on the beach before going against his boss' recommendation of going on camera.

I’m positive that he would prefer to stay but under a calmer situation. We have zero clue of the inner workings prior to this, putting stock in reporters articles is a fools errand.

Pretty funny that he went from potentially taking a year off, to asking for 6-7M per year and then meeting with other teams within days.... all over the map

In fairness, he said that when he was sure he was going to be sticking with the Leafs. I fully expected him to get a job fast after Fridays' news.
If he was sure he was sticking with the Leafs job, why even bring that up “you won’t see me popping up for any other job this year, it’s leafs or nothing” I wonder. It has a pretty clear meaning.

I mean he’s got a right to change his mind I guess but makes the decision to walk away bc he didn’t seem committed seem even more correct.

This just strikes me as dishonest really.

I wouldn’t use the word dishonest. It’s collusion. Took me forever to get on board about the GOP. It’s your guys turn.

Way too much smoke and carefully crafted press releases and tweets to present to the league when the Leafs file tampering charges.

At this point the Penguins need to give the leafs a second round pick to sign him. Period.

It’ll be interesting to see if he gets the Prez job because… be careful what you wish for. Even Presidents have bosses and he might find John Henry, who sounds like he fancies himself a baseball nerd, has even more opinions than the MLSE board.
