The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

Now that I think about it, he had a contract in hand that he was going to discuss with his family, why even say publicly “you won’t see me pop up for any other jobs this year”?
Probably because he was not expecting to be fired. It is different if he quit and then did this. Being fired has a shot to the ego that I don't think he was expecting.

If he was sure he was sticking with the Leafs job, why even bring that up “you won’t see me popping up for any other job this year, it’s leafs or nothing” I wonder. It has a pretty clear meaning.

I mean he’s got a right to change his mind I guess but makes the decision to walk away bc he didn’t seem committed seem even more correct.
He chose leafs though.

Ask Hextall and Burke if there is less pressure in Pitt.

Unless he gets a cup in the next 2 years he won’t be around for the rebuild.
This I agree with. To me, he is signing a three year deal basically.

Which is interesting, they are hiring a guy who couldn't get his team a 2nd round win to get them over the hump.

I wouldn’t use the word dishonest. It’s collusion. Took me forever to get on board about the GOP. It’s your guys turn.

Way too much smoke and carefully crafted press releases and tweets to present to the league when the Leafs file tampering charges.

At this point the Penguins need to give the leafs a second round pick to sign him. Period.
I'm sure somebody reached out to him. So he assured folks he wasn't listening to offers. It was leafs or nothing. He decided he wanted to GM with the Leafs.

But before being fired I'm sure he legit believed what he said.

The reason given was that it was too hard on his family to pop up elsewhere though. Find it hard not to wonder what happened to that.

Other than the 1950s mentality of many in that region western PA is an awesome place. He will buy a house in Sewickley heights and be able to get away from hockey.
Isn't he a conservative though? Maybe that's up his alley?

He isn't 65 years old though. Pittsburgh's winters are boring. Even in summers, City is not really close to anything in the way more eastern cities like Phily are; so you can't take a drive and see something new. There isn't anything noteworthy to look forward to on a day to day basis there. Going downtown is a hassle with traffic, and when you get their it's all underwhelming.

Having said that affluent folks like Pens' players have stayed there for duration of their careers so maybe their experience is different than a middle class fellow's.
Have you lived in the area?

It was on both sides. They layed the groundwork for a defense. This is not a new tactic, they're trumping this.

Would I as a fan rather he stayed? No way. I thought Kyle failed and should not have been brought back.

Am I upset at him showing humanity? No when you put it that way but that's not what he did. He comes out saying the job is hard on his family but extra few millions would heal that!!!

He emails the guy who cold called him and gave him an absolutely unbelievable opportunity, instead of picking up the phone and talking.

I am 100% sure he will regret what happened after a week of rest on a beach in Cancun.

He was a Toronto Maple Leafs executive before he was 30!!!! Had years left to make money. And he did what he did.

I am not mad at him as a fan, glad he is gone in fact. I am mad at him as a person in the same age group as him. I sooooo wanted to be Kyle as I'm sure millions of others wanted to as well. What he did makes me mad yes.
being mad at him as a person shows a big lack of empathy IMO.

everyone's fighting their own battles. you seem to object to how you think he fought his based on limited information.

like, you think he doesn't realize what a fantastic opportunity he had? the guy is clearly really fucking hard on himself. that was evident long before this year.

he obviously did not handle himself brilliantly in this negotiation but he's already suffering the consequences for that (i.e. lost his job). the personal vitriol just seems like beating a dead horse to me.

and I disagree with your characterization - he came out and said the job is hard on his family. he did not say publicly that a few extra millions would heal that, and we have no idea what terms his counter offer contained.

I see your point. This is not a normal job though. It's not a bank executive who could "shake up " the boardom and become an exec in the healthcare industry.

There has been fewer than 210 GM's in all of NHL history. What is he left to do? Move to Pittsburgh of all places and again be a GM? Take on a lessor role with significantly more normal salary?
be a dad? be happy?

Then why come back in the final minute with more demands via email? How he and his agent handled the final days tells me they knew Shanny and board would walk away but he walks away playing the victim

I have no concerns about having a change of heart but they didnt appear to be negotiating in good faith

yeah I mean if Dubie pops up as GM/Prez in Pitts then that raises a whole bunch of red flags and will cause me to revisit my assessment of things

Maybe Kyle is trying to eventually switch sports. I don't see how the Penguins job is more enticing than the Leafs job.

Not to mention he's got to live in Pittsburgh. His wife will be bored out of her minds. Only so many times you can eat and "meat and potatoes" and visit mount Washington.

He goes to Pittsburgh, impresses John and eventually switches to their baseball side.
escaping the TO sports media may be the biggest possible positive change for the Dubas family. just speculating.
