The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

Kerf + double retention woulda opened up a world of possibility. Hell, they could have even still traded Engvall and added a couple scorers up front. That's the kinda creativity I wanted to see from Kyle.

It’s not that I think Mirtle made up any of his article, I’m sure that was what those sources’ perceptions were but I still haven’t seen anything actually indicating Kyle didn’t have freedom/agency here. You’d think they’d have offered something specific by now.

He seemingly got everything rubber stamped by MLSE and blank cheques, he got to bring in his OHL coach and Soo alumni, he got to spend entire drafts’ worth of picks on deadline acquisitions, etc.

Christ.

Honestly, I have zero doubt that had Dubas remained in the job here, he’d have signed Kerfoot to a multi-year contract extension this summer.

The article does say that they never engaged kerfoot's camp in extension talks at least.

Honestly I think Kyle's love for Kerfoot was because he was loved in the dressing room. People seemd to love Kerf so Kyle felt it was important to keep him around. I think? It couldn't have possibly been his on-ice play, though this reasoning is equally as dumb. Good riddance. What a fucking dud GM.

just trying to clarify in my head....

we paid for O'Reilly at 50% ($3.75), and then another 4th rounder to get Minny take $1.875 of that. we got a 3rd rounder for Engvall.

if we had moved Kerf instead of the 4th rounder, we would then have had an extra $1.625 in capspace. That would have easily covered the few hundred K that iirc we were over the cap with Engvall here.

So at best the choice was Kerfoot plus a 3rd rounder over Engvall plus a 4th rounder plus an extra $1m in capspace, which i guess could be argued to be the right choice. maybe.

Thanks for logic-ing that out.

think the Sandin deal is still what makes no sense to me

Does trading Kerf in that scenario allow for Bertuzzi? Or would they still needed to have traded Engvall for that? Either way, seems like a no brainer but just wondering.

I mean his love for guys like Jarnkrok, Kampf, ZAR, Acciar etc. suggests on-ice love as well.

Half the team was Kerfoots. At least the rest made $4 mill combined though.

Yeah, I’ve noted this before. Dubas had a definite “type” when it came to his supporting forwards.

If he had access to cloning technology, the forward group would’ve been Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Tavares & eight Kerfeet.

could also be the old sunk cost bias at play -- Kerf was the last remaining bit of the Kadri return...maybe doobs wasn't ruthless enough to purge it all

So the team very realistically could have been:

McCann-Matthews-Marner
Knies-Tavares-Nylander
Bunting-ROR-Engvall
Acciari-Kampf-Lafferty

Rielly-Brodie
Sandin-Lilly
Gio-McCabe

I never like looking back like that and just dropping all the iffy moves to see a better roster....

...BUT, yeah obviously Dubas made enough mistakes, and consistently, that giving someone else a try is more than justified.

Agreed, but thats just 3 different pretty minor moves.

Protect McCann/Kerfoot over Holl
Trade Kerfoot in the ROR deal
Sleep in on Sandin/Engvall day.
