The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

Ya sure, that's why Karlsson ended up getting traded elsewhere.

yeah if we missed out cuz we dragged our feet....then we're talking about guys who ended up being traded elsewhere.

which means...Ekholm. anyone else?

trying to even remember big name dmen traded in the offseason or previous deadline.

of course Lindholm wasn't even signed.

i don't really get the insinutation of what the board would even be reviewing tbh. do they care about contracts? i know they're not up there discussing the hockey merits.

It really doesn't even make sense in light of what he was allowed to do.

So he can trade futures for McCabe and retention, but he can't trade for the full value of the Ekholm contract or the EK contract, or retention on them, because...he can spend more than $82M somehow on non-injured players? What exactly would the approval be for, and why was he able to get timely approval on ROR and McCabe?

and of course even if that crazy situation was true, the bossman move there is to just make the trade anyways and dare the board to cancel it.

I think whatever we end up hearing on this approval subject is baloney made up by the Dubie PR machine to rehab his image after the fact.

The only deals I would expect he'd need to raise with the Board or maybe even Shanny would be trading one of the Big 5 because they're marquee players making big money that are part of the identity of the team itself. I don't think the Board would get in the way of anyone new being added, or anyone other than the Big 5 being moved.

Well, procedurally it can't work like that. The GM has authority with the league to make trades. He doesn't get Board resolutions or anything.

If he makes the trade, it's done. The Board can't cancel the trade later, it can only cancel Dubie for defying them.

yeah it's weird. the insinuation is that every move has to go to the board for approval? even though they spend more money than any team and could spend way more without blinking? and that if that was stupidly the case, and even knowing how time sensitive trades can be, that they have no actual process to make this happen except to try and phone shanny, hope he answers, and hope he can wrangle the board together quickly enough?

it's all horseshit imo. doesn't make any sense.

yes, exactly. "fire me then, assholes".

Also super duper convenient that our failures are in fact, everyone’s fault except the buddy of the only people talking to the media. What a coinkydink.

None whatsoever.

And Shanny doesn't exactly seem like a guy who doesn't understand the pace at which dealmaking goes, so out of touch that he doesn't get that he needs to be responsive, nor is it likely that he needs to go upstairs and get authority from the suits to approve in a Board meeting.

Shanny: "Uh, ladies and gentlemen of the Board, we'd like to add Erik Karlsson. Do you approve?"

Board: "Who is that?"

I mean he’s now supposedly hunting for a prez job so I guess it makes sense his side is gonna lament how inconvenient it was he couldn’t deal directly w the owner.

I only want to be here or take time off.

Well I didn't know Pittsburgh would call at all, no not me.

If Dubas ends up with their President of hockey ops job plus the salary he was looking for in his last minute counter-offer to Shanahan, that’s going to smell a hell of a lot like tampering.

Not like the league would ever rule in the Leafs’ favour on that though.

You can also bet Dubas will try like hell to poach Matthews and/or Nylander if they make it to free agency next summer.
