The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

keeping him now greatly increases the likelihood that he stays on under a new GM, providing a convenient scapegoat after we lose in the 1st round next year.
I would imagine the current focus is the draft. There's other business at hand and they've been left in a little lurch.

That's possible. It would be a power move for Shanny to fire Keefe himself though after some pretty solid regular season success and a first round win. I mean he was gonna bring back Kyle based on his performance so maybe he feels the same about Sheldon (though Kyle definitely hinted that he may have to make a change there if he stayed on as GM). But even if Shanny heavily leaning towards canning him, imo the right thing to do is to discuss it with his new GM first and let him pick without removing a potential candidate in Sheldon first.

So we shall see.
Does Shanny need a power move after dispatching Dubas?

No. The general manager fires and selects coaches because he's paid to manage the hockey team. I see nothing wrong with this at this stage.

I know this ended up being called the zen brigade before but I'm just gonna try not to stress about something til it happens.

Not gonna assume they're going to make a bad GM choice til they do.
Not gonna assume they'll keep Keefe til they do.

Team is too stressful as it is already. Shanny seems smarter than Peter freakin' Chiarelli.

Don't really blame anyone else for thinking the worst will always happen in Leafland though.

Maybe I'm biased, but a GM wanting to keep Sheldon would be a red flag for me.

This is the way tbh. Shanahan hasn't outwardly done anything yet for me to question. This isn't going into a ufa season with Brian Burke and Mike Komisarek as one of the prime UFAs available and you have that pit in your stomach feeling that you know what's coming. Shanny may not have a large sample since he seems to stay out of the way, but everything he has done thus far has been mostly agreeable. So until he does something completely off brand and stupid, it's not worth stressing over.

If you're going to hire a junior lawyer at a law firm, you're ideally going to want the person directly above them who will be managing them to interview them and have a strong voice in whether to hire them or not.

Most GMs (unless they are bringing in a coach they are familiar with), will give the old coach part of the season to prove that they can adapt.

IMO, they need to rip the bandaid off and give a new coach a full offseason and training camp to get the players ready on systems etc...

Don't do what they did with Babcock.

This is fair. And I’m honestly not stressed about their GM search. The reporting around it has mostly been entertainment for me, and I don’t really believe they’ll actually hire the likes of Treliving, Chiarelli or Bergevin.

I am concerned that the new GM will be fooled by Sheldon’s regular season record though, and/or for political and job security reasons will opt to keep him in the position and hang onto one of their “fire the head coach” bullets for a rainy day.

That’s why I’d have preferred that Shanahan just wipe the slate clean and shown Keefe the door too at the same time he fired Dubas. I mean, hell, he bothered to fire the entire Marlies coaching staff at that point. Why not Keefe too?

because the marlies actually stunk.

It's weird after the job he did they wanted him to stay. The narrative is different in other markets.
The Treliving love affair stops if he becomes GM of the Leafs.
