The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

Firing GMs doesn’t happen all that often, DD not being let go with Bergevin was the anomaly

One thing we know for sure is that the gauthier/cunnyworth firings were done "normally" and effectively and without any drama.

As far as Shanahan criticism goes, I should also add that it’s either dumb or gutless that Keefe wasn’t shown the door at the same time as Dubas and that he’s still here.

Dumb if Shanahan’s preference is that this guy remains our head coach.

And gutless if he thinks Keefe should go, but he’s leaving it to the guy he hires as GM to take care of that bit of dirty work. Would also be unfair to Keefe keeping him twisting in the wind instead of freeing him up to pursue other jobs.
Maybe he's waiting for Dubas to accept the job in Pitt and then have to ask the leafs for Keefe. To wit we would answer.....sure for a pick.

Why do they owe Keefe anything? He’s under contract and getting paid, and if he gets fired by the new GM, he’ll keep getting paid anyway.

Keefe can ask for permission to interview for other coaching positions if he wants out. Or he can wait and hope the new GM loves him as much as Dubas does. His call.

shanny already said the new gm gets to pick the coach. Fire keefe and you take a guy who has been wildly successful at every level he has coached with (including a 680 win% over 4 years in the nhl) out if the running.

Also doesnt force the new GM to make an instant decision on his first handpicked coach. Gives him a year to line it up if he needs it.

lol. Yeah, no biggie. Give it another year with Keefe as coach, and for the final year we currently have Matthews & Nylander under contract.

Yeah, sounds like a wonderful idea. Lilly at least would have plenty of time to make sure he gets the press box to stock his favourite snacks for the 2024 playoffs.

Better overreaction than sitting on the fence. And it's not like I think this now, I thought this last July. I figured they'd get burned over it.
But we got over the first ground hump. I guess if they turfed him last year, Potentially Keefe would b gone too so maybe third round?

Clean house. There is no time to waste here. Get the right coaching staff in now to acclimate with the core that you intend to keep.

keeping Keefe for the year is a waste of time.

Its not even the emotional move imo. We've watched him bury kids and get out coached in the playoffs every fucking year he's been here. I will say it again for the people in the back, but winning in the regular season with rosters hes had isn't an accomplishment of note.
And it would be a bigger indictment on Keefe should the incoming GM say nope, you're not my guy.

Now I'm not saying it is a requirement for hiring but it should be, I mean look how lucky Pittsburgh is that Kyle became available golly gee

Upper management remains PR sterile

I agree with all that but it should be up to the next GM

Doesn't really matter if we fire Keefe now or a few weeks from now anyway.

I'd still assume he's probably gone but we'll see.

keeping him now greatly increases the likelihood that he stays on under a new GM, providing a convenient scapegoat after we lose in the 1st round next year.

And this is exactly what I'm afraid of.

If we're making a clean break, let's make a clean break. One of my major concerns from this point is that the org fell backwards into the right decision and didn't really want it, so one foot in and one foot out is fine and exactly as you noted, provides cover fire for the new GM to play politics as we burn another season under Keefe.

That's possible. It would be a power move for Shanny to fire Keefe himself though after some pretty solid regular season success and a first round win. I mean he was gonna bring back Kyle based on his performance so maybe he feels the same about Sheldon (though Kyle definitely hinted that he may have to make a change there if he stayed on as GM). But even if Shanny heavily leaning towards canning him, imo the right thing to do is to discuss it with his new GM first and let him pick without removing a potential candidate in Sheldon first.

So we shall see.
