The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

They have a really shitty pool of candidates to choose from.
They spent a year to decide on Dubas then in 48 hours changed their minds. Yes, understandeable given his actions. BUT they put themselves in this situation.
Leafs really thought they could just keep Kyle hanging and then just give him any contract he'd sign.
Was the pool different last year? And if they choose a shit retread this year, they would have done the same last year anyway.

Why is this year's pool of candidates worse than last year's?

I agree. Though my main criticism is of Shanahan being prepared to bring Dubas back at all following this season.

If he’d chosen to give him this past year as one last kick at the can and then fired him right after our season ended, I wouldn’t take issue with that.

you can't credit Shanahan for wisely moving on or whatever because that isn't what happened. at all.

the Leafs can't ever do anything normally. It's always a fucking circus.

Remember whe I said they should have signed him or fired him? Kyle Dubas could be the candidate. You keep ignoring I said this,. I'd be very happy with Dubas as GM.
Many would not based on his actions. But you know what? This non decision led to this situation Many saw this coming.

The narrative is so diff if Shanny cleans house when the season ends. Shanny looks bold… Keefe/Dubas get a forensic recap of all the mistakes they made….renewed hope ensues immediately

As far as Shanahan criticism goes, I should also add that it’s either dumb or gutless that Keefe wasn’t shown the door at the same time as Dubas and that he’s still here.

Dumb if Shanahan’s preference is that this guy remains our head coach.

And gutless if he thinks Keefe should go, but he’s leaving it to the guy he hires as GM to take care of that bit of dirty work. Would also be unfair to Keefe keeping him twisting in the wind instead of freeing him up to pursue other jobs.

He made the decisin...in less than a week tho?

Is it normal to fire the gm in the last game post-game?

Has everyone gone crazy?

GMs are fired all the time without also firing the coach simultaneously. Most all of the time actually

He was caught off guard by Dubas — not blaming him, but it’s a weak look for him to be surprised by someone he thought he knew for almost a decade. Ie what will surprise him next

Dubas semi fired himself my asking for the moon at the last minute… ie I only want this gig if you agree to all my last min cravings

Ok so you wanted to keep Dubas.

But that doesn't explain why you think firing him at the end of last season would have been better than firing him now.

Spin can go either way.

You could essily say it would be much weaker and easier to just re-sign Dubas as planned despite his actions that week, and that it took strength to riskily admit a mistake and go in another direction even knowing the flak was incoming.

Ok? I’m not making a blanket statement about what should happen every time a GM is fired.

Just that I think the right move right now for this team specifically is to fire Sheldon. And whatever the justification is for why it hasn’t been done yet, I disagree with it.

I don't think much about this situation is really abnormal other than it's happening in Toronto.

Just like there's nothing about the GM/Pres/Owner chain of command that's abnormal either.

For the record though, I'd fire Sheldon too. Execution, overcoaching, lack of focus/preparedness seems like an issue every playoffs he's been here.

Stronger to fire Dubas immediately

I don't want the president making the coaching decision tbh. Hire a good gm and collaborate with him/support him. That's his job. Don't fire coaches alone.
