The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

For the record the NHL has it's projected cap numbers from before the season, the same ones that MacKinnon used, and next year's cap looks to be right on projections.

Projections:

23-24: 83.5
24-25: 87.5
25-26: 92.0

15% would be $13.1. Anything in that range (+/- $500k) is expected. Anything less is a discount.

I don't really know that there's a good argument to get a higher percentage of the cap than McDavid. I'd think it'd be less than that.

Maybe it’s telling that the only people convinced Matthews will break the bank are mediots and fans of other Canadian hockey teams.

Matthews decides. But it's ok as a fan to hope that he looks at comps instead of Dom's charts on valuation. I just hope he doesn't subscribe to the Athletic.
Don't think he can afford that with the peanuts he is currently making

eh Matthews took ~13% of a reasonably projected 5yr cap at the time, and ~14% of the projected year 1 cap at the time. And didn't think he deserved McDavid money.

Based on his comparables (like McDavid), he took the absolute maximum AAV he could’ve asked for while also not locking in for 7-8 years like literally every single one of his contemporaries because he knew he’d be able to make way more money that way.

So again, it’s lovely to believe that this time around he’ll prioritize putting his team in the best possible position to win a cup ahead of cranking his earnings potential to the max. But like I said, it’ll be a first for him.

LOF is that you?
Zeke lives to be incepted by me.

I think I was literally making this same argument against zeke past week. What a difference a week makes.

Anyway, we interrupt this tired debate to make the following announcement: Harvey’s better get its grills warmed up, because LOF is coming to Toronto tomorrow.

you're not biased this time; just contradicting regular season zeke where McDavid and Matthews are firmly in their own stratosphere
I think zeke’s point though is that contracts and ‘market value’ have long been very disconnected from reality especially at the top end.

and it’s only ever an issue/up for debate when a Leaf is a FA

Don't think that's close to right tbh.

McDavid signed his contract in Jul 2017, for the season starting in 2018.

I don't know what league projections were for the 2018-19 cap at the time he signed the contract, but the cap was 75.0 for 17-18 and 79.5 for 18-19.

His 12.5 was 16.7% of the 17-18 cap and 15.7% of the 18-19 cap.

I know for sure that in the day Matthews signed his contract the projection for the cap in year 1 of the deal was 83.0, even though it came in at 81.5 in the end.

Matthews' 11.6 was 14.0% of that 83.0 first year cap projected at that time.

The difference between 16% and 14% is huge, obviously. In terms of next year's projected cap in year 1 of Matthews' deal, it's the difference between $14.0m and $12.25m.
