The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

I'm not convinced that the 9.5 rumor is anything but speculation and people putting some pieces together. We've heard rumblings that they aren't even close.. I believe that. But connecting 9.5+ to them "not even being close" seems to be just Mirtle connecting the dots. Could be true, but maybe Leafs are trying to get him lower than that and Willy would take 9.

Only 700k difference though. You'd think they'd get there no?
Yeah this is all media nonsense at this point.
Team is probably around 8.5 and he’s apparently asking 9.5, with a very similar player recently signing for 8.8. If what we’ve heard about his $ demands in the media are true this is gonna get done.

Even if it’s correct, with the Meier contract it’s a high but not an out of range demand. The leafs have to be expecting him to land between 8.5 and 9.

In fairness to the Meier comparison, Willy's contract is a year out so if they're identical players Willy should theoretically get more money on a deal with that term.

The nerdies show Meier as potentially being better than Willy, though the counting stats and stuff that matters for contract negotiation probably gives Willy the edge. So him asking for 9.5 isn't absurd, if true.

Everyone points to Vegas big D and 4th line when talking about their depth. But the thing I really liked about their team is that they had 2 really good players on each of the top 3 lines.

Eichel-Marchessault
Stone-Stephenson
Smith-Karlsson

They played garbage like Amadio, Howden (Barbashev?) with them, but it didn't matter because those guys can all drive a pretty good top 2 line.

IMO the Leafs should be looking to add 2 good forwards. Assuming Murray goes LTIR, they should have ~$16 mill in cap space with 10 F, 6 D and 1 goalie. And this lineup:

Knies-Matthews-Marner
Robertson-JT-Willy
Jarnkrok-XXX-XXX
Holmberg-Kampf-Lafferty

Rielly-Lilly
XXX-Brodie
McCabe-Timmins
Gio

XXX
Woll

With the non Big 4 being interchangeable.

They really don't need to spend any more money on depth players. Split that $16 mill up on the best 2 F, D you can find and Samsonov. that averages out to $4 mill/ player. Realistically Sammy shouldn't get more than $3ish max on a short term deal, leaving $13 ish mill for 3 players. Lots of cap flexibility to add 3 good players.

Based on the things Tre and even Kyle before that has said, I just don't get any indication that they're prioritizing increasing the talent level or offense on this roster. Maybe Tre is just holding his cards close to his chest but I'm pessimistic on this one. I think they'll make one decently sized move this summer and that'll be for a d.

Yeah, I mean they could spend that $13 mill on Goodrow, Reeves and Zadorov or whatever.

But they could also fit like Schefele, Hanifin and Fast/Rodrigues/Pierre probably.

Except everyone wants to copy the recent cup winner and that rarely works. You would need a guy like Hill to do what Hill did. That's why they won.

They've pretty much got two $5m ish slots available. More than that if they stay super tight on 4th line salaries.

They definitely wanted to bring ROR back and they knew he would come in around there (at minimum). And I buy that they've been interested in some of the D names floating around at around that pricetag.

Vegas seems to think Barbashev was more important than Smith.
