It's part of the appeal of MLS/Saudi to some of the soccer players. Out of the fishbowl.Imagine if someone in another sport talked about wanting to play in a small market and not be recognized.

I think the 700 to 1 billion is the appeal. It's part of the appeal of MLS/Saudi to some of the soccer players. Out of the fishbowl.
That's 1 player.I think the 700 to 1 billion is the appeal.
I think Doan loved his ranch. I think if he had a do-over he would have left the Coyotes. just a feeling based on his sudden turn in his late 30's about the Yotes trading vets. Guy wasted his career.
What I found odd about him is I once heard him interviewed on a Toronto radio show and the hosts were just gawking about how amazing his life was in Arizona and his ranch, and not being recognized. Uh, winning doesn't matter I guess? It was a weird conversation about a guy who usually missed the playoffs on his team.
See, to you it seems like a “wasted career”. But to Shane Doan, he found the place he wanted to live and pulled in $65M to live and raise his family there for 20 years. So, probably doesn’t seem like a “waste” to him.
And I can understand where some of these guys are coming from. Some people crave fame and recognition, but I guess I’m more of a misanthrope, because I would fucking loathe constantly being recognized and approached by random people in public that want to stop & chat, take pictures with me or get my autograph.
It could have been awesome as well in other places.Yeah Doan's life seemed like an awesome one to me.
It could have been awesome for different reasons, yeah. For someone like him, he obviously preferred making millions in a quiet place raising his family without being bothered much. For others, they seek and crave the attention and notoriety and are way hungrier to actually win a cup.It could have been awesome as well in other places.
Doan got out of the 1st round once in 21 years. Are we really saying that's ok because of where he played? Sure feels like it. Someone in this market would have a different perspective from fans.NHL culture is the only pro sports culture that jerks off to career arcs like this though. Charles Barkley is a fucking HOF and former MVP who made multiple deep playoff runs and he gets clowned on by anyone who has ever won a ring (especially the 2 guys he works with) whenever he talks about winning, what it takes to win, criticizes a player, etc.
If you were a great player in the NBA won didn't win a ring, you're spoken about in hushed tones as a cautionary tale. Great hockey player who played for the same basement team for your whole career? Fucking legend.
He did start to bitch though late in his career about the Coyotes struggles and trading-off assets. And then they dumped his ass rather disrespectfully. Now he leaves them. He should have left during his career and now sit on that ranch. It could have been awesome for different reasons, yeah. He was plenty happy there with zero success for years. The one thing he was missing in his eyes was team success as he got to the late stages of his career, understandably. Doesn't make his career a waste though. There's something to be said about relaxing in a quiet spot, taking zero abuse from the fans or media, raising a family and making millions and millions of dollars. He did start to bitch though late in his career about the Coyotes struggles and trading-off assets. I think he is thought of positively because he was a Coyotee. I don't think he'd have that same rep as a Leaf. No one cares he got out of the 1st round once in 21 years. It would be a massive issue in a lot of other markets. He was plenty happy there with zero success for years. And that's exactly why he was happy to live where he lived. Much happier, stress free life.I think he is thought of positively because he was a Coyotee. He did get to carry the dead body of McCain. Howard Berger has never done that with someone so famous. These conservative whiteys get married way too soon. Have fun (on and off the ice) first, then settle down on some pastoral ranch
Well that's great but not sure why he's looked at so fondly for 21 years of a broke team no one cared about and never a chance at winning. And that's exactly why he was happy to live where he lived. Much happier, stress free life.
Yeah Doan's life seemed like an awesome one to me.

And he was guaranteed an awesome life anywhere as an NHL player. He had a guarantee of no winning though in Arizona more than anywhere.Awesome life. But as a NHL career, no one outside of the Phoenix metropolitan area should have ever mentioned it as of the day after it ended.
