The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

Well d’uh….Mindz applied for the assistant position. Can’t be bothered to be GM proper as it interferes with his long term Mexico relocation plans

There was no remote work option for the GM job, surprisingly though the assistant GM only has to be in the office for a few days a month. Was a no brainer.

That’s a good point. He’ll have to land in another big market because it’ll be hard for him to find another org to fund his best in class spending on scoutining, analytics, performance science, etc

Even if he does it won't be the Leafs. Any job he takes from here on out is a step down. He grew up here, had a chance to bring a cup to Toronto and bask in that glory forever.

He is still a highly successful individual but knowing high performers, I am sure he will feel the void. Maybe if he wins a cup with another team the pain subsidies a little bit.

So do Dubie, Keefe, Willy, Tavares, and Marner all end up at the finals in the next year or two with their new teams?

You just know it's coming. #leafs

It only ever goes one of two ways. Either that person is dead and gone more or less forever and we question why we bothered with them for so long (Babcock, Hunter), or they go and make a media narrative of it in their new city.

Fwiw, I'm going to say that Dubas isn't the hot commodity for top GM jobs that we've been led to believe, and that Sheldon's tenure hasn't washed the stink off of his resume. They're going to end up in rebuild-y type situations if they get GM & head coach job offers.

Kyle always needed success fairly early on in order to get people on board with the analytics movement. That's too many playoff failures for a "forward thinking GM" and this is a guy that reads Twitter and all criticism towards him.. There are far more analytics doubters than believers and the pressure got to him enough to change his approach. His only hope was having success at a much earlier date because the belief of fans/media would allow him to believe in himself and his plan. He needed to go because he is a lost puppy at this point.

Tulsky would be a dream.

I dunno… despite the fossils in the game, the trend for analytics is still bullish

I like Doob’s long term job prospects, just not right now because nobody wants to hire a sad puppy

I heard the 4M offer elsewhere (maybe it’s copypasta)

The control issue is important and if true implies there was some interference from above… like I mentioned a few times previously, there’s not many worse feelings than not being allowed to do your job the way you’d like to.

It didn't help, but he chose to spend his extra cap on Kerfoot, Holl, Jarnkrok, & Murray. That's 11 million bucks to work with.

He received a very, very poor playoff ROI for that ~15% of his cap spend.
The Holl one is iffy to me. He's been a good soldier and reliable regular season player. He imploded this year though, and it was a major problem against Florida.

Kerf, what can you do - started off promising imo, but he gradually fell off a fucking cliff. If there were options to replace him and he could've rid himself of the full salary, it was dumb to not cut bait already.

Jarny I still like. Wasn't much of a factor in the playoffs, but his hustle was there, and against Florida, no one other than Rielly was a factor, so I'm not upset. I still think that's a very good use of $2M to play the guy on the third line and have him move up in case of injuries where he didn't look out of place (definitely not in the regular season at least).

Murray was junk. It was a bad trade on the retention front, letting the Sens off the hook way too easy. The first of some questionable moves and non-moves last year that foretold where things were heading.
