The Motherfucking 2021 Playoffs Thread

Matthews and Marner really, really need to step up tomorrow with us being desperate for a win and Tavares out.

Honestly, I would kill to be in position where I had to worry that two of the best players in the world (playing on my team) may not show up.

they lead just fine last night....but they have to score. we cannot win otherwise.
That’s what I mean by showing up. They are our two best offensive players and it’s the playoffs. We’re relying on them tremendously now and moving forward. It’s crucial they come through with results.

I could see that angle if I were a Habs fan. I’d rather be in our shoes too.

2 goals combined in their last 6 playoff games. Not good enough. If you include Tavares it's 4 goals in their last 6. Not horrible but they need more production from their 10+m crew if they want to go far.

The fact is that when you’ve set your cap hits up the way we have, the guys making the $$$ have to produce. Also why it hurts so much when you lose one of them.

The entire logic behind that structure though is that there is no functional difference between a 1-2 million dollar player at the beginning or end of their career and a 2-4 million dollar player in the middle of their career. If your 1-2 million dollar (ELC and greybeard) players aren't producing, you failed in your evaluation. Basically, if you need to spend a bunch of money on Paul Byron's, you fucked up.

The difference in last night's game offensively (aside from the obvious of our PPG #2 centre being out) was one of their overpaid bottom 6 players performing, and our entire supporting staff swinging and missing hard. Matthews-Nylander-Marner are good for about 1.5 goals per game. We got 1 out of them last night. Where the fuck was everyone else? Getting fucking buried for the most part.

Case in point. Tampa's series last year against Columbus, which they won 4-1

Their core offensive players (Point, Kucherov, Stamkos, Hedman) scored 6 goals in 5 games of the series. Their depth scored 8. Every Tampa Bay win in that series was a 1 goal win. How differently does that series go if Coleman, Gourde, & Killorn don't show up?

Leafs need to do a better job of having a $100m payroll so they can afford guys like that

Hey, they could have added Foligno + Hall this year and played a similar enough cap game.

Couldn't possibly do that though because we had to make sure we had enough cap space to activate Freddy for a game.

I don't get why we did this at all. Who on Montreal is so scary they need a shutdown line?
A potentially reasonable explanation is that they thought they would need Nash in the later rounds and wanted a chance to get him up to speed.

But I don't think that's true. I think Keefe wanted a 'shutdown' line.

It’s too bad also that Hyman’s first game back was playing on the first line in the playoffs.

Matthews, Marner, Nylander are good for about 3 points per game and only got 1 yesterday (0 from Marner and Matthews and of course 0 goals from them too). We’ll really need more from them tomorrow.
