The Motherfucking 2021 Playoffs Thread

Dubas also went over and above the cap with the LTIR/playoff loophole by adding an injured Riley Nash and re-activating him for the playoffs. So in summary...Tampa used their cheater cap space on Nikita Kucherov, and the Leafs used theirs on Frederik Andersen and Riley Nash.

Maybe that's the correct thing for Leaf fans to complain about?

The only thing that saved the Leafs from the David Clarkson contract was the Nathan Horton contract, and somehow it was a cap benefit to the team to have both on the books once both players were completely broken and unable to play.

The NHL cap needs fixing.

The thing about it that is most remarkable for me is that Kucherov didn't play a regular season game and yet was still ready to go for the playoffs and as on his game as ever. Fucking impressive.
It helps that he was probably working out at 100% for well over a month... but couldn't play due to cap circumvention.

And the only reason that happened was because CBJ failed to get insurance on Horton's contract.

For sure, but the fact that he was able to compete at top speed and in synch in every regard, looking like he'd played all season, was quite impressive. Normally a guy would need a month to get into top gear.

Meh.

The league obviously shouldn't allow what Tampa pulled with the cap this year. But under the league's current rules, it is allowed. Blame the league, not Tampa. Every time Dubas and Pridham creatively use a cap loophole, we applaud them, after all.

Looked refreshed. Like he hadn't been banged up all season.

Fuck him.

You have to be a pretty awesome team in the first place for that scenario to work out for you I'd say.

The thought briefly crossed my mind that a team could do that with say, Eichel, and let him get that surgery. But then they'd have to pay a huge price to acquire him and have him sit all year. Not sure we see that repeated.

the Kuch thing was a pretty unique setup

it would be like Auston missing most of the year with his wrist

I don't think it's outside the realm of possibility Kucherov's injury is one of those things that under normal circumstances, an NHL player would just grind through and play with, and get surgery for in the off-season.

But with Tampa being in cap hell, it being a weird pandemic season and with them not needing Kucherov to get to the playoffs, it just worked out perfectly for all involved for him to get his surgery right before the season.

Oh, they're awesome and you have to have the ability to get the players.

Re: Kuch
Dubas and Bergevin would have done the same. If not, we’d be angry.

Absolutely. Like I said, we always applaud Dubas and Pridham's clever CBA tricks.

If the league you play in is really dumb, you may as well exploit it as best you can.

It's not just that kuch missed "most of the season", it's that he missed every game of it, so that they were able to ltir him from the very first game and never have to shed salary all year.

If he plays even one game in the season and then gets injured, they've already had to dump 2 significant players to fit him in to start....but they never did.

And it's only the shortened season that let him miss exactly the whole season on a reasonable injury rehab timeline - a full 6 month season and there's no way they can play that game.

Rules or no rules, they won with a roster way way way over the cap, which in any other season could never have happened.

So......Asterisk, Asterisk, Asterisk.
